Here is a low cost way of removing wallpaper instead of buying those expensive wallpaper removers. I remodeled a kitchen last winter and it worked great. I used car windshield washer fluid. As with any wallpaper remover, you will need to score the paper with a wallpaper score tool. This pokes small holes in the paper so the remover soaks behind the paper and to the glue to loosen it. I simply poured the fluid in a spray bottle and heated it in the microwave for 30 seconds - I had to remove the turntable tray and tilt the bottle because of the height. Spray soak the paper, wait a few minutes and remove. If you have ever purchased these removers, you know they can get pricey. I went to Walmart and paid about $1.50 a gallon for the "de-bug" type. The plain fluid was about $1.00 but I figured the "de-bug" type that removed bugs and tree sap, it probably did a little better job on lossening the glue. As with all chemicals, you should have plenty of room ventilation or wear a respirator to be safe.

Great suggestion. I hope that old story I heard about windshield washer fluid is not true...

"its just water with blue food color"

Thanks for the tip!

Aloha Kent,

Thanks for the recommendation. I have a potential wall paper "situation" in my near future that I can try your suggestion with.

Peace,

I invested in a wall paper steamer which works really well. The cost is about $150. I let my buyers and sellers use it, with a signature of course of waiver of liability.

They love me for this!

Great tip .. that fact that it CHEAP makes me happy... I guess the warm water and grease cutter helps

Patty / Scott,

I'm cheap! The kitchen I remodeled and had a lot of wallpaper to remove and I shuttered at the cost involved with the removers. Windshield fluid contains Methanol and the type I bought had other ingredients that help remove tree sap, so I gave it a try and worked great. After all, all you are trying to do is to loosen and dissolve the wallpaper glue. The reason I heated it was because any liquid that is warm will naturally do a better job on the paper's glue. I don't know if this would well on the thick fuzzy paper from the 1970s, might need a steamer for that.

Kent,  Great post there are so many chemicals out there that are better and cheaper for jobs around the house.  The best carpet and grout cleaner that I have found is just good old Windex.  Just spray on the carpet spots and rub with a towel, it is great for coffee or what ever.  Thanks for the Tip.

Hi Kent.  Now this one I have heard about before.  I've never tried it myself, but friends of mine swore it actually did a BETTER job than the expensive wallpaper remover they had used in the past.

There are so many chemicals out there nowadays.  It probably has vinegar and some type of soap in it but if it works, why not.

My mother in law told me that liquid fabric softener in a spray bottle with the same scoring technique also works like crazy - but is a bit more expensive than washer fluid.

This is great to know, thank you so much.  I will be passing this along to my friends!
