There is a garden of earthly delights....and it takes a lot of work to maintain it!

GardensGardens are not as complex as one might expect. In truth, a garden is just a controlled growing environment for plants. The gardener controls the types of plants growing in the garden and the location and manner in which they are displayed.

In addition, the gardener must control the intrusions of unwanted plants. The definition of a weed is merely a plant that grows where you don't want it to grow, and any plant can be considered a weed by growing in an undesirable area of the garden. It's not the plant itself, as a matter of fact,  some weedy plants actually have beautiful blooms that could stand on their own in the right place and under the right circumstances.

The gardener must also deal with pests of every kind. Leaf eating insects and caterpillars, root eating moles and shrews, and ravenous squirrels and deer can decimate the most verdant flora. A gardener knows how to eliminate the threat from pests without poisoning the harvest.

The gardener also makes sure that the conditions are right for growth. .The soil must have the right amount of nutrients and moisture for the intended plantings. A good gardener know what each plants needs, and recognizes what will be provided naturally, and which will needed to be added by amendment.

The secret of gardening, and any other endeavor, is actually quite simple. You don't fight conditions and the elements that you cannot change. Rather, you adapt to them. You make the adjustments necessary for proper growth and a potential harvest down the road!

So don't fear the challenge, embrace it. Who knows, you just might do a lot better job than you think you will!

I could have used this advice three months ago.  I didn't yield ONE tomato or Jalapeno this year, really.  Great post and I like the point you are making.  The picture is absolutely gorgeous!

C...

I was half asleep when I wrote that last night (early this morning) and when I read it in your comment, I said to myself ..."Hey, did I write that?" Thanks, as always!!! lol

Mel...

I had been wanting to use that photo, and the garden themes are done to death, but I figured, I'm really tired and maybe I can slip this one in! THX to you and your entire network! ;)

Richard - I was expecting a reference to Heironymous Bosch (who did a tryptich(?) called The Garden of Earthly Delights) or Maxfield Parrish (who didn't but most people think did). I can picture your photo (a great one as usual) done in the style of Parrish. And a moral to the story that is right on, again.

Mike...

I think that Bosch's triptych was a bit inspired for his time, he lived to see the discovery of the New World ... I just think that the phrase itself paints a mental picture and can be interpreted in any number of ways.

And when I saw the photo, it popped right into my head!

The problem with triptychs is that you can never find a really good one when you need one! lol

Richard...this is true in allof our life.  We need to deal and roll with the punches and not try to control everything.  If we only stop, look at the whole picture, the path will be much easier to find!

Richard, in this photo I am amazed at how still the water is. Must have been a very calm day with the wind and it was very sunny too.

Richard,

Do your photos inspire your posts or do you take the photo to go with a thought for a post.  I guess it the chicken and the egg question.  You always have the right photo for each post.  Thank you sir for the inspirational topic.

Gary...

I never though about the flatness of the water until you mentioned it, but it must have been an extremely calm day! Thanks for the comment!

Don...

The photo usually inspires the post ... but sometimes I find one. My favorite was for Mel's Swan Song and I had a great pic pf two swans that I hunted down!

Ok, so I went back to the Swan Song.  It is an amazing picture.  I appreciated the post even more the second time around.  Weird thing- I lost a few pounds without trying and my mother said my voice sounds 'happier'.  Perhaps the office closing was the best thing for me.

Or that could be starvation! lol Anyway, you sound happier to me and I can't even hear your voice. And talk to Carolyn, she's hung up on Hagen Daz and may need an intervention! ;)

Rain..

Well, that does NOT surprise me in the least! I just wrote a post that may surprise you but I doubt it!

I just got off the phone with my friend Gina.  She posted here tonight.  She also said I sound more like myself.  As for the starvation, no way!  I was a total pig tonight.  Will blog about it tomorrow.  BTW-  I really liked your new post.  I was surprised.
