POLITICS AND FAMILY VALUES

By

As it is written, there is none righteous, no not one/Romans 3:10

I just read through a blog by Rich Dansereau and all the ensuing comments, and would like to give my opinion. The opposing parties(Democrats and Republican) can spend all day pointing out the various moral lapses of each others party. Through the years I have found very few segments of society if any with a higher percentage of members with low morals then the segment we call polititions.

But no matter the group we are talking about we will always find sinners because we are all sinners. There have been no perfect human beings since Jesus Christ walked the earth.

What I find disturbing though is when people say the Republicans have no right to run on a family values platform because they are no better. This is precisely why someone should be running on that platform. Because we need as a society to do a much better job than we are. Should Sarah Palin change her beliefs because her daughter became pregnant? Ithink it would be much beter to instead show her the love of Jesus and hope that she learns from the experience and maybe even uses it to help others learn. Just the same I also don't think it very wise to stop preaching abstinence just because you didn't get through to your daughter, the lesson still needs to be preached.

As a country we all to often practice " Situational Integrity", doing the right thing when we are being watched or when it is to our benefit. We need to start doing the right thing because it is the right thing.

I am constantly chided on my rather strong Pro-Life stance. I keep hearing"Do you really think making it illegal wil stop it?" No I don't think it will comepletely stop it but I also don't think we should condone something that is so obviously wrong just because we can't stop it. I do not feel it is right to ostracize anyone one or any group because of a behavior which you find morrally wrong, but I also don't think you are standing in integrity when you condone it or turn the other way and make belive you don't see it.

I know as well as anyone the power of forgiveness, I believe there is no greater gift than the forgiveness of my Lord. I know I will continue to sin, but I know I will also do anything in my power to bring others to the same forgiveness I have recieved.

So am I happy that the party who preaches family values breaks those same values so often? Of course not. But I do thank the Lord that there is a party out there preaching them.

Chris - the whole point was how conservatives and liberals view moral values. Liberals tend to view moral values from a group perspective, conservatives from the individual. Conservatives tend to have a more personal responsibility view of moral perspectives.

Hugh .... thanks for your article about recent politics and SITUATIONAL INTREGRITY that so many of us choose to be involved with.  We know the power of forgiveness.  Best wishes and God bless.

Integrity is something that cannot be just doled out in certain situations.... you either exercise it in ALL of life, OR it isn't integrity......

SITUATIONAL INTEGRITY...... sounds like the word "hypocrisy" wrapped up in a politically correct phrase, hehehehe

Funny how that works.....

I think that situational integrity is a phrase that if we took time to reflect upon it many of us would find ourselves guilty. Integrity is a battle that must be fought every day, but it is a battle worth fighting. To walk the christian walk and to be an example to others or especially to be a leader, integrity is crucial.

Chris ~ I was not lumping you in with the liberals. I was commenting on how mean the liberal media was, and you seemed to be defending them. I don't condone attacking Chelsea Clinton or any child of any politician. The way people raise their children is their business, and who is anyone to throw stones.

I do believe in abstinence, but I also believe in forgiveness. We are all but flesh, and thank God we serve a forgiving God, not someone we should run from, but run to.

Also, who can be with children 24/ 7. We teach children morals and then it is up to them to apply that knowledge in life. Mistakes are made, most find out how it feels to be used by another human being, and it doesn't feel good.

In the case of Gov. Palin's daughter, it certainly looks like they were young and in love, and are doing the right thing in having the baby and getting married.

Hey now here is a great discussion of the issues of the day. It's so good to see other peoples point of view, no matter how wrong they might be. Sometimes we just have to agree to disagree and move on.

Thank you Hugh for taking your strong Pro-Life stance, now matter what the cost. I will stand with you as I believe that the measure of a country is how they protect their most vulnerable.  Who is more vulnerable than children?  They are our future. With Obama voting several times to defeat a bill giving rights(to Life) to children who where born alive after abortions, should be a wake up call to all mothers and to all fathers. These children are set aside to die. How far has this country fallen?

Scott - where have you been? This happens often. It is one of the most controversial issues with Obama, voting against a bill that provides for the care of late term babies who are born alive after and abortion attempt. Obama voted against it because he didn't want to have pre-term babies born alive jeapordizing abortion rights. He also argued against providing care for the baby born alive saying it would put an undue burden on the mother.

Mike ~ Obama supporters have no idea of facts. They want us to prove everything we say, but they cannot.

Hey Nick we do not want to let facts get in the way. You and Mike better stop pointing those things out to the Obama folks.

Scott you need to take some time to read up on Obamas votes on this matter. He contradicts himself greatly.

Welcome back Hugh.  Did you have any idea what a lively discussion you would start??  I enjoyed reading all the opinions here.  I just can't stand to think about babies left to die after an attempt to abort.  I can't believe someone could be so cruel to a human being! I believe ALL babies have a right to live.  I have a girlfriend who thanks GOD everyday that her mother believed in adoption and not abortion!

Hugh, the media, It is amazing to me how they put us in a box and think or thought we would all turn our backs on Sarah and her family. Grace is the basis of our faith, and since we all have failures in our life, who are we to judge ?

I think that is the most shocking thing to the media, that we would not judge, but forgive.

Hugh, Thank you for the wonderful Christian political statements you've made in your post. You certainly are grounded in Love for your Savior. It speaks out to us through each and every word you write. Someday when you stand before your own congregation it is obvious what a great job you will do in representing your beliefs.

I pray that everyone that "thinks" himself to be a Christian would look to you as a role model on how to reach the unsaved for Christ. More flys are caught with honey than vinegar.

We need more voices such as yours during this turbulent time. I pray God give you the strength and the (time) to bear with us these next weeks heading in to the Election.

I pray that God Bless America and  ALL  who call themselves Americans.

Hugh - thank you for your thought provoking post - I do hope that those who have read this understand the need each of us have for our Savior's help to walk the walk. No one is righteous no not one.

Hi Hugh... long time no see buddy. I like the tone of your post very much, but unfortunately, the plebes in the pulpit are still sounding as bland and tired as the last time I checked. Wouldn't it be interesting if they actually employed a little intellect from time to time? I swear I could write their responses for them on just about any topic, as they are so predictable. I've found that I can rarely take one side in every debate. I prefer to listen because only then can I hear the subtleties that may shake an argument. My opinions continue to evolve in this manner.

That aside, I must say your 'situational integrity' observation is right on the mark. I don't require any outside force to provide me with the impetus to do the right thing. I do what is right because it simply makes sense to me. I would be a raving idiot if I needed any book to show me the way.

HUG!

Family Values-

The gel that keeps a family together.  Similar beliefs.  Similar actions taken during crisis.  The ability to act as a team when duty or crisis arises.  When all else fails, the people you count on and can depend on.  Saying what you mean, and meaning what you say.  Discipline.  That's a pretty big word worthy of being repeated.  Discipline.  Discipline when temptation strikes.  Holding firm in these beliefs.  Staying together when it is really hard or you disagree with each other.  The belief in something bigger than self.  In this context- the belief in country and a cause being bigger than self.  Protecting the innocent.  Belief that protecting these core values and country are worthy of the ultimate sacrifice.
