There's an unusual phenomenum that that occurs on the west coast of Florida known as ''the green flash.'' The Green Flash occures only if the western horizon is absolutely free of haze at sunset.  Just as the upper part of the seeting sun falls into the Gulf of Mexico, for a fraction of a second, a brilliant emerald green lighting of the entire western sky may occur, so dazzling and green and brief, an explosion of light.

Interesting Phenomenon - is it something similar to northern lights?

LLoyd,

I saw him running down the beach the other night. He was chasing his cape.

Hi--I haven't witnessed it myself, but in many areas when the sky turns green it's indicative of severe weather--usually a tornado.  It also does occur during some hairl sotrms and severe thunderstorms.  I'd just love to see one in person.  The pictures I've seen are just amazing!  It is a very interesting phenomenon and I don't believe they've ever discovered a reason why it happens.

I moved here in '84, and prior to that, vacationed in Charlotte County my whole life, and never heard of this, interesting, one day I'll have to watch for it.

I guess I'm lucky, I've seen the "green flash" in Sanibel and Key West Malory Square.  What's wrong here that no one else has seen him!

Check out The Green Ray by Jules Verne, translated by Karen Loukes and published by Luath Press Ltd. It has great descriptions of the green flash and is a fascinating read!
