Getting to Know Your Gas Source by: Mark Maupin

If you have a home with a natural gas line, you may already know all the benefits of having this type of power source. But do you also know the responsibility of having this type of energy source in your home?

Whether you are in earthquake country or areas that often see hurricanes and tornadoes, it may be essential that you know how to turn the gas off to your home, and are able to do it quickly in the time of a disaster.

Many people don’t think about this until it's too late. If an earthquake were to hit your home and rupture a gas line inside, that could cause a major gas leak and lead to an explosion that destroys your home and could hurt or even kill the people living inside.

Finding the Valve

The first thing you should do is find the master valve to the gas line that comes into your home. If you aren't sure where this is, you should call the gas company and have them tell you where to find it or have someone come to your home to help you find the location of the valve.

Know How to Turn it Off

Just knowing where the gas line is located is not enough. You also need to make sure you know how to turn it off. This is best done with a gas company professional at your home to help you figure out the process.

While many people think a gas line is a valve just like any faucet in your home, most gas lines need a little torque. You may need to have a wrench to open or close the valve. In an emergency, you don’t have time to go and find a wrench. You should have a wrench that will do the job right beside your gas valve, so you will be able to quickly act in a disaster situation.

While no one wants a natural disaster to hit their home, it is still important to make sure you are prepared, just in case. Knowing how to turn off the gas to your home can keep a small disaster from becoming a larger one, and possibly save your family as well as your home.
