Stopping Mildew Before It Starts In Your Bathroom   -- By: Mark Maupin

It's a nightmare for any homeowner, going into the bathroom and seeing mildew creeping down the wall of the shower. The battle is then on, you versus the mildew and it often feels that no matter what, you are not well enough equipped for the fight.

The best way to fight mildew is to keep it from forming in the first place.

Understand the environment that is your bathroom. It is important to keep in mind that almost all of the operations in the bathroom revolve around water and moisture. From showers to shaving at the sink and even using the toilet, there is always water in motion in the bathroom.

Keep Air Moving

The first way to keep mildew from forming is to keep air circulating in your bathroom. Mildew loves nice warm moist places to grow. By keeping your bathroom well ventilated you will be drying up that inviting moisture and making it harder for the mildew to form.

Dry Up Water Spots

There are plenty of places in a bathroom where water likes to pool up. These are also the places where mildew is likely to form. The first, and most problematic, is the shower. Whether you use a shower curtain or have a complete shower enclosure, this 'closed-off' effect you are creating holds water in. Ventilation often has a tough time getting into the shower to dry things out and if you don't make a habit of doing it yourself, you may end up with a lot of mildew stains. You should always use your towel to do a quick once over of the puddles of water in your shower and on the floor around it once you are done bathing.

Look for Holes

The change of temperature and moisture in your shower is also the cause of another problem, cracks in caulking. These cracks, while they may look mostly harmless, can cause major problems. Water can seep into these little splits and cracks and mildew can start growing out of your line of sight. It can also start to rot out the wood and other materials underneath your shower tiles. If you have this type of crack or split in the caulk, it's time to patch it.

Once Mildew Appears

Even if you try to keep mildew at bay, you may notice a little bit creeping into your bathroom. It's time to stop it and make it disappear. There are a number of mildew removal products that you can find at the grocery store to remove the mildew. Once gone, remain vigilant in your work to keep mildew at bay.
