Feng Shui and Health Issues:  As a Feng Shui Consultant and Teacher, I have written about what I consider to be things to watch out for in Feng Shui that relate to health--which I am ALWAYS mindful of.  I have written about Leaks as they relate to Feng Shui, Ceiling Fans (which most of my clients do NOT want to part with), some staircases depending on the placement and the way they were built....and BEAMS.

Some of these have what is called in Feng Shui "Cutting Chi" or "Cutting Sha" which literally means they are dangerous points to stay away from because they can-from a Feng Shui Perspective-cut into your body and create health issues, something none of us want.

Feng Shui Health by Feng Shui Long Island & New York

Something I found my Long Island clients sleeping under during renovations--they were moved to the Living Room that day!

Your HEALTH in Feng Shui from a Feng Shui Consultants' Point of View

It would have been nice if, as a Feng Shui Consultant who practices in New York and Long Island, I had taken my own advice.  When moving into the apartment I am now in while my own home is being renovated, there is one beam that hangs down.  Of course I saw it....

It was my son, Adam, who went to Ikea to pick up the furniture I purchased there to bring here to use; I wanted to be comfortable here.  I am not very familiar with Ikea, I had only been there once and found if you don't follow the arrows and footprints, you can get lost in that store for a VERY long time : )  But they have wonderful prices and this is temporary furniture.

I chose a couch that opens to sleep in, two end tables, 4 lamps, a tv stand, a kitchen table with 4 chairs, a bed for the one bedroom and two tables---for the amazing price of $750.00And Adam brought the furniture here while I was working on a Feng Shui consultation in the beautiful town of Oyster Bay to set it up---starting with the existing cable wires.

When I came here it had taken him 6 hours to assemble everything and put It together.  And the couch/sleeper was located directly under the beam.  I won't be here long, I thought to myself---and left it.  Sleeping under it and after a week or two, finding myself tired and out of sorts.  I wondered if it was the beam but hated to ask him to re-arrange the furniture.  I began to wake up with headaches that persisted through the day.  I now KNOW it was the beam....and it was time to make the dreaded call.

"Why?" asked Adam, "is it a Feng Shui thing?"  I sure thought it was; he came over that afternoon, made some changes and got me out of that beam.  For the last few days I have been feeling just FINE.

This is what happens when a Feng Shui Consultant doesn't take her OWN advice.  Yet another lesson learned and I hope it encourages YOU to take a walk through your OWN home and look for Feng Shui Health related issues.

Hi Carole, you always inform and enlighten me on all things energy-related. I had never thought of that before about being under open beams like that, but it makes sense.

I believe that following fung shui principles definately is important for insuring good health... I am going to tackle a couple of areas in my home that could use a shift in energy.

Carole, I'm sleeping in a death trap . No wonder I'm having some problems...OMG, I think I've done everything wrong. This could be why I have not had a good nights sleep in years.

Deb's bed ... by the way, deb is bed spelled backwards! WooHoo.

Okay, so I'm sleeping under a ceiling fan hung from beams with a pointed poster bed...

yikes!

I paid good money to have the ceiling raised and the beams put in...am I a feng shui dummy or what?

Am I going to die?

That's a fair quesion.

Could this hurry it along that is?

Thanks Carole.

Should I sell?

Free advice is good although it's looking more and more as if I need to employ you.

Carole,

So, when you say 'beams', you are talking long wooden posts that are mounted on the ceiling and not the pitch of it, right?

You never cease to amaze me because you are so intuitive!  You are a natural for Feng Shui which is probably why you are so good at what you do and in so much demand here on Long Island and in Manhattan!

I'm glad that you got to the roof, I mean 'root', of your problem! ;)   (I know - really bad joke...ba dump bump!)

Carole- I know I shouldn't laugh but Deb sure sounds desperate now...kinda like the person that hears some medical stuff and then starts looking at their body to make the diagnosis fit :)

Sorry Deb, but I like your room .......and I am sure Carole will just have you move the bed :)

OK Carole- My question to you is why were you sleeping on the couch and not in the bed LOL :)

Carole,

That is a great story.  I wish I knew a little bit more about all of the principles and so forth but it certainly brings home some good points.  Stephanie is a former nutritionist and is very much into health from a diet and spiritual standpoint.  It all makes sense.... is quite amazing.

Am glad you are doing better !!!!

Liz what do you mean girlfriend...you think I'm making up a bedroom? Get on...that is my bedroom and that's why I'm worried about my chi !

I'm under beams...feng shui wants no sharp points or edges (the bed) and the fan is right over it. We had better get a reply from Carole soon or we will ALL be sleeping on the couch...ohoh. My couch is under beams too.

HELP!

Later in the rain~Deb

p.s. I'm not desperate...just yet. And, thank you Kathy. But, there's nowhere to move the bed!

It considers four factors: the Chi or "breath of life" potential of the neighborhood; the site orientation or the importance of the direction in which the building faces; the five elements -- fire, water, wood, metal, earth -- and their mutual influence upon a location; the power of water and its significance in relation to the property. If you acknowledge and understand the all-pervasive life energy (Chi), you can affect the whole tenor of your well-being. Simple things like placing your furniture the wrong way, using wrong colours, and elemental conflicts (i.e. having the water 'refrigerator' next to the fire 'stove', can create factors that impact negatively on your life. Goodness, I didn't get back here fast enough!  BTW, I am leaving the above spam up because I keep reporting it to AR and then deleting it....but this person is all over AR...Stop her, PLEASE!

Paddy, I'm confused...you have open beams or your ceiling is open?  That one beam here took a toll on me (quickly) and I wasn't quite sure what you meant.

Gary, Thank you.  I think most of the principles of Feng Shui make sense....and hope others "see" it through different eyes.

Elizabeth, If I were the client I would have told her to move it....but I didn't want to bother my son who had already worked so hard.  I had to anyway--and btw, he sees the difference in me!  GBU too my friend.

Joan, It gives you a new way to look at things and I believe, as Gary points out, makes sense...See how you feel after the changes.

Deb---If you were my client---I would tell (not ask) you to take down the fan.  We think of your body being most "open" at night and those fans cutting your energy.  Some choose to take my advice, others can't seem to part with them.  It happens most often over a period of time and I have seen (personally and IN MY OWN OPINION) more health issues in people that have them.  Some compromise and remove the blades and leave just the lights.  The Beams:  They are not directly over you but the sharp edges from them "hit" the bed."  You can try the inexpensive light that shoots up to help deflect the energy (they are about $12 at Ikea) or, at some point, you might want to think about taking them down (sorry!!).  I had a rather fast reaction to one beam (thinking it was only for a short time and how much could it hurt?) and I felt it....maybe because I know about it or am just more sensitive to it.  This is the kind of thing I don't like to find in client's homes---but you can fix it!  I don't have to work to find you, you are on my subscribed list : )

Val, Anything that "cuts" your energy so if you look at Deb's picture (sorry, Deb!) you can see the sides of the beam still direct onto the bed.  I didn't think that one beam here would have such an impact on me--it did.  And yes, I got to the "root" of the problem :)

Kathy, Good, keep me laughing :)  Deb can't move the bed....I suspect what we can't see in the picture are widows on the other side and if you don't have to block windows, we don't.  I tell my clients to take the fans down--some argue and some do it.  And in follow ups those that do it FEEL better!  I truly have seen it over and over again through the years.  Why am I sleeping on the couch?  Cute!  I came here when Laura was still home and gave her the  bedroom (I know, a wonderful mom I am :)  and she's back and forth so much, I let her keep it!  I actually don't mind the couch at ALL, I got it at Ikea for less then $150, it opens into a bed and it's super comfortable!

Christopher and Stephanie, I used to go to a nutritionist and it definitely helped.  Most of my clients seek out wholistic health in many different forms and I use it myself.  I have seen people HEAL from a comination of therapies while the doctors are still scratching their heads.

Liz, The posters are fine, they are rounded and the energy can certainly circulate around them....it's tha fan I am most concerned with.  I am NOT trying to scare anyone but it IS a health issue in Feng Shui.

Deb, You crack me up my dear!  I am seriously NOT trying to scare you, it's honestly what I would tell my client (and do!!).  Some see that it makes sense and they do let me know they feel better!

I really enjoy my the breeze from my ceiling fan. I did not realize the health implications. Does this go for ceiling fans in other rooms, like living rooms and sun rooms?

Kathy, I didn't think it was at all funny...in fact Cynthia has a lovely idea! I'll open a PayPal account and you can watch on camera how my bedroom transforms!

Now, Kathy, what part of that didn't you find appealing??? LOL.

Carole, I slept with the fan off last night. Is that pretty much the same thing? Sleeping with it off? Or, do we have to lose the blades?

OMG, we are in Texas woman!!! It's hot as "you know where." I do trust you, my friend. I'm just whining.

Thanks for the advice and I will let everyone know when the PayPal account is ready!

Later in the rain~Deb

Rich, I am most concerned with staying under them for a period of time and especially sleeping under them.  You body is most vunerable when it is open during sleep and it can (sorry again, Deb!) present health issues at some point or another.

Cynthia, I happen to love the idea :)  So does Debra!  Let's see if she really gets this started, you lovely people make me laugh all the time!

Kathy, I got the bed and the couch from Ikea....they are the foam ones and I love not having springs in my back :)!  Once I got out from that beam I'm feeling a lot better :)

Deb, Let us know when it's open!   Having the fans move IS better, it's better yet to take them down because they still represent cutting energy.  I wrote an entire blog about this a while ago but can't find it---this issue of taking down ceiling fans & using the front door are my two biggest issues with clients (true)!  Even a standing fan would be better, it has those grates across the front that help shield the blades....Sorry, Deb, it's one thing I've seen over and over again for years and it IS a FS concern.

Carole, Yes ma'am. Salute. I agree and if you truly think so then I agree. I have just placed an offer on another house. If I am accepted I will be hiring you to help me in there ... it's a mess. I have to remodel and I NEED YOU!  I'm at least sleeping with the fan off...that's better than nothing right? I will take the dog goned blades down tomorrow if you insist. I do trust you and my electirc bill will increase....but if it helps health then I'm all for it.

One time Carole...tell me to take the fan blades off and I will send you a picture with them gone! Promise.

L,

Deb

Deb, I read about the offer and hope you get it!  It sounds wonderful.  I am sorry to say I would advise you to take them down...I KNOW it won't look as nice but when I see ceiling fans, I see energy being sliced (a horrible way to put it, I know).  Over many years of practicing Feng Shui over a period of time they ARE a health hazard.  And if you're not sleeping well, email me--I will give you several other things to incorporate with removing them.  I'm sorry, I am flexible when I can be---not on health.

Carole:  I would love one day if you were to visit my area to go around together and look at some our log cabins here to see what you think.  Some feel so warm and inviting and then others can feel very unsettling.  It would be so interesting to learn from an expert like you about how to make them all feel warm and inviting.  I think the challenge is that they can be quite rustic.  I'm not sure how rustic fits in feng shui.

Donna, From what I see of those gorgeous log cabins you have, I feel the same way.  I have to believe it's the elements because there is so much wood.  I know that while keeping it rustic, I would add COLOR.  A difficult balance I'm sure but it's important in Feng Shui to balance the Elements.  I am sure I will be in your lovely area one day and meeting you in person.
