Chanel

It's been quiet at the house today. Chanel, my sweet Lhasa-Pom had to go to the hospital this morning.

It all started on Sunday morning when she didn't want any breakfast. She started throwing up. This went on all day then into the night.

I made a call to the vet, Dr. Taylor and left a message. Later, he called and told me if she still felt bad in the morning to bring her in.

Sure enough as soon as I got out of bed she threw up again. I hated to take her, but I really didn't know what was wrong with her.

I loaded her in the car with her bunny and off we went to the animal hospital. An emergency case to be fit in their schedule. I gave her a kiss and assured her I would be back for her as soon as they would let me. I was relieved that Dr. Taylor would know something about her condition.

The home office was so quiet I couldn't work. I'm so used to having her around to keep me sane. I missed her barking at nothing, potty breaks and playing with her toys. So, I waited....to hear any news.

Finally around 3PM I got the call. She was pretty sick and had a fever. Now on antibiotics and a shot for nausea. Possibly pancreatitis or an infection of some sort. The bloodwork results tomorrow might give a clue. An x-ray showed nothing.

They did tell me I could take her homeand give her more of the antibiotic tonight. So I anxiously went to fetch her home. I really didn't want her sick and in a cage all night at the hospital even though she would get the best of care. I hope for good news tomorrow.

She has spent her evening under the bed, sleeping and weak as a kitten. No food for 2 days and throwing up might do that to you. She can barely walk. Anyway, I'm hoping she will feel better tomorrow. It's funny how our pets take over our lives. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Condition Update Sept. 29, 2008:

We are so blessed to have so many people follow our post and check on Chanel. She had another blood test to see where her levels are today.

Her BUN - 20 and creatinine 1.9. (Normal dog range might be BUN 20 - 30 and creatinine 1.6) This is fantastic news!

Dr. Taylor was very please with her recovery. He thought that the kidneys might return to normal with 3 months at this rate of progress. Whew! What a nightmare this has been! I think the suppliments have made quite a difference in her health. I didn't ever put her back on the antibiotics.

In short, all the tests could not conclude what made her ill. After constantly thinking of what was different in her diet or what she could have been exposed to I can only think it was something in the rawhide chew bones. Maybe they were made in China or had arsenic, bleach or worse in them. I also know now that the pieces can expand and become lodged in the intestines! If you have any in your house throw them OUT! I will never give her anything like that again. Greenies are also dangerous because they don't break down in their system and can get stuck.

Thank you for all your constant prayers and kindness. We are blessed to have you as a friends!

XOXO

bella  used to eat greenies as well and she ALWAYS threw up about 12 hours later.... turns out her body couldnt digest the bigger pieces she would eat, and would reject it, and make her throw up. Pretty gross.

Tony - Please don't give Bella any more Greenies! Those things will cause you more problems than you need and could kill her.

Yeh, she is getting better, now you get some down time and recover yourself.

Maybe you should get a teddy bear for yourself since Chanel has the bunny.

Condition Update Oct.13,2008:

I thought I'd add this update because there are some of you that might be following along because you have a dog that has this condition too. Chanel had anoth blood test today. BUN 28 Creatinine 1.7. I'm not sure why her BUN is 8 points higher than the last time. Normal range is 20-30. I do like that the creatinine level has dropped a bit more. Dr. Taylor wants to test again in a month.

For awhile there she did drink a lot of water each day. Now not more than a bowl a day. In other ways she seems normal. More energy and doesn't sleep as much. One thing I did notice looking back on the days before she almost died was that her eyes watered a lot. Also, she slept endlessly and didn't seem interested in food. So if you start to see these signs in your pet you might want to have a blood test done to be sure. Especially in older dogs.

It's good to see the old Chanel again!

Lizette, such an adorable puppy!  Thank heaven she is feeling better now.  You must be exhausted from all this as well - don't forget to get yourself some rest and pay attention to your own diet as you go through this too...

Chanels new haircutIt has been a few years now since this health scare and many people ask me how Chanel is doing.

Well...she has completely recovered! Our lives changed after that ordeal.

While she was in the hospital I had them give her only distilled water. I still keep her on this to keep her kidneys form having chlorine or any other harmful substances in it. Why take a chance.

All her food is organic and no treats made in China. Be sure to read those labels.

She finally had had a professional haircut.

Chanel will be turning 5 in a month and we plan a BIG party for her.

I truly believe all the support and prayers from our AR friends helped keep her on this earth.

Chanel will post a birthday story soon. Stay tuned!

Happy New Year Gay! Thanks for stopping by! Chanel is still hanging in there. She has battled malignant melanoma since Aug 2012. Hoping she can beat it.
