Harassment phone calls....

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with PRODUCER Realty, LLC

One of our local associations sent out another e-mail to the members about someone making sexual harassment phone calls to real estate agents in our area. This type of thing is probably going on around the country, giving the recent attacks on female real estate agents in certain parts of the country.

These maniacs are probably roaming around looking for their next victims, so please be very careful as you go out to meet prospects for showings. Protect yourself, get a pepper spray, get one of those tasers if they are legal, or take some self defense classes. With the shifting market, agents are glad when their phone rings and most are quick to run out to meet a prospect at a house. If you absolutely have to meet the new prospect at a house, and you are concerned, ask some one else to go with you.

A female agent in my office scheduled an appointment with a prospect that drove in from out of town, she was fine until he showed up with two of his brothers all wearing black leather jackets. She came into my office and told me she was uncomfortable and promised to split the deal with me if I would accompany her to the showings. I said no to splitting the deal with her, but I was glad to go show those homes with her, and after seeing those guys I could understand why she was concerned. Not sure what would have happen because those guys never bought anything.

So be careful out there!

Hats off to you for being so understanding. In this market I know a lot of people (men and women) who would have said yes to splitting the commission.

It is so true that we are all so tired of the lack of sales, and even more true that we have to be careful. I think men as well as women need to be careful. I have a 'pal' who knows where I am at all times when I am showing alone, and at times I even have my phone on while I am there just to be safe. That way if something weird happens, they can call for 'back-up' with the address and I feel so much safer.

Teaming up for safety is a great way to go, but if you don't have someone that can ride with you, use those cell phones and a safety pal to protect yourself.

Thanks Victor for reminding us to be safe!

Victor great post and very timely.  It is so true everyone must keep that safety issue in the back of their mind.  We need more awareness most certainly for the younger agents that are hungry and may not be thinking of what could happen.

Victor, good job!  By just agreeing to go with this agent and not requiring her to split her commission, that's where it's at!  We all need to help each other out when it comes to safety!
