Don’t Let the Smoke Out…

By
Home Inspector with Complete Home Inspections, Inc. TN Lic#050

Having been involved with electronics and electrical components for most of my life, I have come to learn that all electrical and electronic equipment runs on smoke. To heck with all the gobble-de-gook, electron theory and big-brained mathematical mumbo-jumbo that electrical items run on electricity. Lets face it folks, once you let the smoke out of something, it just quits working… Period! Did you ever notice, that it seems as if manufactures find the stinkiest smoke that they can find and somehow cram it into the latest and greatest gismo?

That being said, someone obviously let all the smoke out of this smoke detector, which IS NOT a good thing. Although they do run on smoke, smoke detectors need this smoke to be able to detect the smoke that may occur in your home to protect you and your loved one.

Smoke detector tips:

  • If your alarm is ‘chirping’ the batteries are low and need replacement.
  • If your smoke detector is smoked or is 10 years old or older, replace it.
  • Test the device monthly for functionality, and replace the batteries annually.
  • Periodically vacuum the grill cover plate to remove dust.
  • Proper placement is essential. One outside of the bedrooms and one in each bedroom placed 8-12 inches from the ceiling are generally accepted practices.
  • To prevent nuisance alarms, do not place detectors in or around kitchens or bathrooms as steam can trip the sensors.
  • Periodic cleaning as per the manufacturers specifications is recommended for all detectors.

Michael, good post, now that summer is winding down, it is a good time to make sure that the smoke detectors are in good working order, before the winter heating season arrives!

So THAT'S why I am hearing that chirping sound!!  My place is so small that the smoke detector goes off every time I bake something... or have company.

I did not know about this "smoke " thing.  Really????  As for tripping them my grandmother always tripped hers when cooking.  She had a towel handy to fan it afterward.  It was pretty funny to watch that little woman say "oh for G*** sakes" and swat that towel around the hallway.  Maybe she should have had it moved? Thanks for the informative blog.

Paddy... No! Electronic equipment does not run on smoke. That was just a joke. But, when things do smoke, they do quit working...

Oh my word, I've set mine off a time or two from cooking as well! Great post, Michael and a very cool reminder I need to change the batteries every six months. It's that time again. :-)

Morning Michael,

Sometimes I think you are the fly on the wall here. When my son was here Sunday, we changed the battery in the detector. It continued to chirp, however. So, either it is in need of replacement, which I will do today, or the new battery was defunct.

Having built a ton of computers from parts that were not always designed to work together, I know the smoke thing.  We had to put a sign in our assembly room "No Smoking".

Michael, good job----we will no longer talk about electrical "theory"----you have finally put that to rest with electrical "fact."  Now the only question is----what are you smokin?:)

I think that soke detectors are overrated. We didn't have them 50 years ago, and people didn't seem to care. Why do we need technology to tell us that our house is on fire

Because we can, and people that don't take advantage of technology to save lives are irresponsible. Ok I feel better now.

When I had my apartments, many of the tenants would cover their smoke alarm with aluminum foil to keep them from going off while cooking.

Michael, one of the frustrating things as a landlord is checking a property to find the tenant has removed the chirping smoke detector- too lazy to change the battery.

Good advice that can't be mentioned enough as we all have these devices and after time begin to ignore them, except the chirping.

You certainly are witty!  And I agree, as a guy who has let the smoke out of a LOT of electronics in my life, manufacturers use only the stinkiest smoke available...

Thanks fr the tips on smoke detectors - I check mine every day...around suppertime.

I enjoy new houses, new smoke detectors....house ready to move in .....detectors are 20' up on a vaulted ceiling with little plastic bags around them. Hard for them to smoke in that scenario. Buyer likely to break neck getting at them.

Great reminder. My kids are still in grade school so we still live by the "check the batteries when we change the clocks" rule. I did just show a NEW home - not a smoke detector to be found. It was the son that noticed; none of the adults did!
