Want some pain? Look up your own name. Where are you? What's your Internet position? Suppose they are looking you up. What will they find? If it's nothing, that's a report card on you.
And it's not just Internet preparation. It's other research like finding mutual friends, calling a few vendors, maybe a few customers. There's one more thing in preparation: Be prepared with an objective or two about what you want to accomplish in the meeting.
Proper preparation takes time, but I assure you it's impressive to the prospect. He or she knows that you have prepared, and is silently impressed. It's an advantage that very few salespeople use. They make the fatal error of getting all their own stuff ready.
Even better, for purposes of reputation management, you should set up a Google Alert for your name, so anytime anyhing is said about you, you will be notified via email.
you should set up a Google Alert for your name

cool idea... how does one do that?
Hi Rummy!
My folks were the proprietors of Mothers Bake Shop in Yonkers many years ago- I still remember the phone number KI8-5676.
I'll Google my name and see what comes up.
It's not so painful... I Think!
I have been blogging for almost two years and it is absolutely amazing what it has done for my search engine ranking! And it happens faster than any SEO expert could do, and for free!
Setting up alerts is almost a must anymore, IMHO. Reputation management is so important today. Also, set up alerts on Yahoo. Sometimes the two pick up on different name mentions, for some reason.
To set up a Google Alert, visit: http://www.google.com/alerts The directions are pretty simple. You will add your name of whatever you want to be alerted to and the email address you want the alert sent to.
Google is very effiecient with this. Yesterday someone quoted be in a blog post, and I got the alert within an hour of the post.
I was just talking about this a couple of hours ago w/an old friend (in both terms of the word). She was talking about her nephew in Iowa who sells RE & bragging on when you google his name you get all sorts of hits. Then it occured to her to google mine. Slow & steady...
Yeah- I frequently google my name. Thanks to Consumers Advantage Mortgage for the google alert idea. I never heard of that before!
My name is a little tougher... apparently there's a very famous Canadian ex-hockey player named Alan May... yeesh!
