What Am I To Do

By
Real Estate Agent with Resource One Realty, LLC

It's been a question that has plagued me for a while.  I was washing my car recently and notice that my 2000 Intrigue was starting to show some signs of age.  Paint is starting to peel in some small spots.  There are a few dings in the doors (one of my many pet peeves) and it might be getting a little smelly inside.  I think I dropped a french fry between the seats in 2004.  To me. it still looks pretty sharp though.

My question is do I buy a new car or just spruce up the one I have.  Obviously, money-wise it would be cheaper just to fix up the one I have.  What I question is how does that look to my clients and customers.  Does driving an older car influence their perception of me?  Do I look less successful than other agents?  Should it even matter?

In sales, perception is everything.  I know many agents drive a Lexus or a Mercedes as a sign that they are successful at what they do.  Unfortunately, I'm not really a Lexus/Mercedes type.  I'm more the Oldsmobile/Buick type.  The kind of car my children refer to as a "granma" car.   It's not that I mind the Lexus/Mercedes.  It's just that I can't rationalize paying more for a car than I did for my two houses combined.

I'll keep thinking about it for awhile.  Maybe in the spring, I'll get something new.  In the meantime, I'll go out and look for that french fry.

Add some air freshener under the seats and get it hand waxed... keep it as long as you can because the new ones are being built to be safer with better gas mileage all the time... I have seen 2009's advertised with 32mpg... so what will 2010 bring?  :)  AS for the Lexus/Mercedes appeal, I don't wear DK originals either so that isn't even on my radar.  I like grandma cars too... its what and who I am.

Cindy, it's funny about cars today. Body styles don't seem to change like they used to a few years back. If it looks good and provides good service, I would keep it. My car is just about five years old and it is worth about one third of what I paid for it.

I would keep it!  As long as it's clean (Don't worry....I often have to look for stray french fries too!) and you're okay with the gas mileage - KEEP IT.

Cindy -- It's funny that the assumption is that a fairly recent model Mercedes costs an inordinate amount of money, but I have to admit that assumption is one of the reasons I drive one. The other reason is that my ML320 suv is over 3000 pounds, which helps it qualify for an additional "heavy-duty vehicle" tax break. The kicker is it's a 2003 model I bought on eBay last year for $16,000 -- less than what many people I know paid for their Camrys or Accords...

Cindy:

I love my Intrigue.I am so sorry that Oldsmobile is no longer a line that GM produces. My vehicle is very special to me my father was a GM person and he drove the wheels off his Buick, Olds, and Pontiac's. My Intrigue is a GLS and is tricked out with everything at the time I could get put on I did, she has a 13 CD changer that is unheard of now days. I love her get up and go and without a doubt her sun roof makes my heart sing. I enjoy her having the 13 CD changer because many times I put books on CD in and when I  get out and about I listen to a new book that is just out. How fun. My Intrigue has been in a few parking lot mishaps --- but off she went to the body shop and she looks like new. I am sure you get the picture. I so enjoy driving her that I find it hard to think of replacing her. Oh, by the way I sell million dollars properties and my clients drive very exotic cars that can cost up to and over a quarter of a million dollars and not once have I felt that they were looking at me as if I were not successful in fact one of them said that they would like to buy my car car if I should decide to sell her its a classic. If you must consider purchasing a new vehicle think energy efficient. Good luck with the french fry.

We have responsibility to be in business for a long time and serve our clients for a long time.  Unless you're sitting on a lot of cash or income...spruce it up....I think that the $$$ spent on a new car would depreciate so quickly.  Spruce it up and make a deal with yourself to have the car go for 2 more years and then buy a new car when the home sales are plenty....SORRY DAVE....MY Friend!

Just spruce up the one you have. Keeping up with the Jones' is overrated. I'd rather my clients perceive me as rational and logical than flashy and insecure.
