9-11-01 The Flag is Still Flying

Seven years ago, nineteen men attacked our nation with a cruelty unrivaled in American history.  As Americans around the country began their day, the unthinkable was broadcast to us on our televisions and radios: the World Trade Center buildings were under siege. We soon learned that terrorists on a suicide mission had taken control of commercial airplanes, and we watched in horror as the second tower was struck. Almost simultaneously, we saw the Pentagon, the symbol of our great nation's military strength, go up in flames. Also, the brave passengers of the fourth hijacked airliner, United Flight 93, launched America's war against terror with its first victory by preventing another attack on the Washington, DC area.

In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, we prayed and came together as a nation, and in our grief we united in our shared resolve to defeat an evil that threatened our way of life. Tomorrow, we honor the memory of our fellow citizens lost on that awful day, and we reaffirm our determination to not forget those lost to these attacks on our nation.

On Thursday, September 11th, at 9:03 a.m., EDT, let's all observe a moment of silence for those lost seven years ago.

As we go about our lives tomorrow, let us honor those that lost their lives, and let us also pray that an attack like the one we witnessed seven years ago never happens again.

I'm certainlt IN!  9/11 was unthinkable, obviously, and we need to remember what happened because history has a way of repeating itself.  We also need to look forward and have people and measures in place to protect us from any further harm.

Hi David,  Ask everyone you know to remember where they were or what they were doing on that day and they will be able to tell you with great detail.  Lets hope neither political party tries to make it an opportunity for self promotion !

Thanks to all that commented.

As fate would have it, my wife and I were both in downtown DC, just a mile as the crow flies from the Pentagon.  After the building I was working in was evacuated, I was walking down Constitution Avenue trying to find my wife.  I remember the smoke and sirens seeming to be coming from every direction.  People with panicked looks were walking fast or running in all directions. I had visions of what it might have been like in London during WWII as the Germans bombed them.

Once my wife and I were joined together, we had to evacuate by driving into Maryland and then across the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge back into Virginia where we lived. As we crossed that bridge headed home, I remember looking back up the Potomac River at the black smoke and flames still in the air over the Pentagon.

An hour later, my wife and I were home. It was a beautiful day and the birds sang as we sat on our patio and ate a sandwich.  As we talked about what had just happened, we both were numb and shocked that after what had just happened in NY and DC, here we were enjoying lunch at home on the patio.  Like millions of Americans, we sat on the couch and watched what was going on via TV over the weeks and days ahead.

President Busch ordered all Federal employees back to work the next day to show that we were wounded but not down.  Our normal 40 minute commute instantly became a 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours, due to lane closures on I-95 around the Pentagon and all of the new security measures that were in affect.   This lasted for months, but the most memorable thing occurred a day after the crash, while commuting to downtown DC, my wife and I observed a huge American flag being draped over the Pentagon roof hanging down the south side of the building by firefighters still trying to get the fire under control.

I'm sure everyone remembers where they were on that day, and what they were doing, this is probably a good time to reflect.
