What we don't do to keep our home and yard looking good!!!

If you could have seen me today you probably would have laughed. I looked like something from the movie Ghost Busters. You see, we have these beautiful Leyland Cypress trees lining both sides of our 2 acre property. Well, guess what, they have been invaded by an insect called a "bagworm". And to top it off they are eating and destroying our trees. We decided to try and take control of these varmits ourselves since the cost of a prefessional company was way more than our budget would allow at this time. So we donned our garb, (me in long pants, my husbands old long sleeve white shirt and white bandana and boots... and oh yes, a mask) Can you picture all this?  We then mixed together an insect spray concoction that smelled horrible (of course) and with a professional style pump on the back of our pick-up, (since we don't have an ATV), we started the attack. I don't believe I was doing this.... buried amongst some other pine trees lining the neighbors yard next to ours. Spraying to the tippy-tops of the trees which are about 20-25 feet tall. Trying not to inhale and let the overspray cover me entirely. But finally the job was finished and to the shower I headed... immediately. ALL IN A DAYS WORK!!!

Oh, are you wondering where my husband is? He had already covered his share of spraying on the other side lining our property line, plus he could not manuver through the pine trees since he's 6ft 4 (and maybe a bit clutsy and no patience).

PS. These are not our actual trees, ours are a bit larger but you get the idea. They are very popular here in South Carolina and provide a beautiful and great privacy hedge. (If the bugs don't eat them up!!!)

Wow I know how hard it is taking care of 1acre flat lands. All those trees must be quite a hand-full.

They are very beautiful though.

Your lelands look great in the picture.  After last years drought we have dead lelands all over the place.  People aren't cutting them down quickly because then you lose your privacy.  Take care of them

My yard looks bad and I am just not into it. I showed some homes that have great yards today.

Makes me appreciate "desert landscaping " all the more. Used to have a LOT of greenery however in Washington state.

Nance,

I have had my own private battle with Japanese Beetles this year.  They eat everything unless of course it is a weed.

Hi Nance,

We planted Lelands to block the view of the shopping center behind our home.  They are growing great.  The neighbors had some brown spots in their trees.  Just for future reference, what chemical did you use to spray them?  I want to be ready!
