Rich, you ask us why we are here on ActiveRain on your featured post of today. Of all the ways I can think of to answer this question, the one I never would have said is this: "For Free Publicity".

You see, while I see the value of free publicity, I didn't start blogging to get noticed by the media.

Here's the truth:  I fight the irresistible urge to place a paper bag over my head when I am asked to be interviewed on camera. It is happening more and more often these days, thanks to my blogging.

When I had lunch with Brad Andersohn this week, I confessed to him that a local TV station had become interested in my blog, and wanted to interview me on camera (eek!) for their real estate segment of the nightly news.

I had turned down this offer before because I was petrified at the thought of being on camera. I told the reporter to interview my boss instead.

Do newly famous authors feel stage fright? Do they love writing the book, but don't want to go on the book tour? Do they want the fortune but not the fame? And heaven help them if they ever get famous enough....and need to sit down on some talk show.

Sheesh, maybe all they wanted to do was be a geeky writer!

I know because that's me.

But Brad gave me some advice that calmed my nerves enough to go on camera last night. He told me that I wouldn't be very good.

AT FIRST.

Because like anything else, being in front of a camera takes time, takes tweaking, and a level of comfort that only develops after practice and multiple times in front of the camera.

Brad asked me to remember how terrible my first blog must have been. Hmmm..... actually, it was pretty good and even got featured. But okay.  I got his point.

I was wondering how I would ever measure up to Diane Sawyer my first time out of the gate. Brad helped me understand my expectations were just too high. (Ya think?)

So bravely, I went back to the office and told the boss I had decided to do the interview myself (eek! eek! eek!) And the cameras rolled.

Last night I appeared on KRON Channel 4 in San Francisco as a mortgage expert. It was the result of writing about the Fannie/Freddie situation earlier in the week. Sort of boring to most Rainers, and it didn't get much play. But the media loved it.

What I would like to leave you with is this: Clearly, reporters are searching for blogs written by experts who are willing to be interviewed and/or quoted. This exposure would cost thousands of dollars if you had to pay for it. But it comes free as a result of blogging. Please don't let your fear of being IN FRONT of the camera stop you from promoting yourself and your business.

These are the fruits of our blogging. Don't be like me and let your apples rot on the gound or be picked up by someone else. Get in front of that camera if you have the chance.

So Brad, thanks for the advice to JUST GET OVER IT. A star has not been born, as you will see when you watch the video. But a camera/video friendly blogger just may have been.

Here is the link to the news story last night if you would like to watch. ( And, please. Let me wake up and be Diane Sawyer next time someone asks me to do this).

Very cool, Janet!  But I heard no mention of Cakewalk Mortgage:-(  *Sigh*  We are going to have to work on your promotion skills.  Seriously though, what wonderful exposure for you to the communities you serve.

Janet, excellent!  I thought you did a great job in the interview.  You spoke clearly and authoritatively.  Hope this is just your first of many interviews on camera.

Hi Janet, I just wanted to say that you looked great and confident in your interview. I was also asked to speak about real estate by a broadcast radio station this past week and I am pretified as I am better in written skills than verbal so I gave the 'job' to a friend of mine who has done broadcast shows before. I think I will stick to my 'geeky blogging'. Good luck to you in the future and hope you get lots of referrals from your news interview.

Tony: I want the fortune but not the fame!!!!! Why do I have to come out of hiding?

Jason: OMG did I forget to mention that all of our clients get free cake and that my partner Jason Sardi takes the cake? What was I thinking?

Brian: My Mom said I was not my normal "assertive" self on this interview. But thank you for the compliment. I hope I can look back some day and laugh at how it shook me up to do this. I had to have a glass of wine at 5pm with the other mortgage brokers in the office just to work up the nerve to watch it at 6. LOL

Diana: Why did you give it away???? You are who this blog was written for. Please re-consider. No one could possibly be more petrified than me. But just overcoming a fear is a big deal.

I feel like I can do it again.

You are so right Janet. They say that confronting your fears is one of the biggest successes you can ever overcome. I will re-consider as the offer is still open. I learned a long time ago to pretend that I am on stage when I am delivering a speech in my living room and to pretend that I am in my living room when I am delivering the speech on stage. Thanks to speech class and thanks for the encouraging words Janet.

Janet - I don't recall telling you that, "He told me that I wouldn't be very good." but whatever I said, if it worked, that's all that matters.  lol~  Maybe I'll have my Dr. Brad show come on after Dr. Phil?  haha.  Congrats Janet, I'm glad to see that you "GOT OVER IT!" KRON has a gabazillion viewers, way to go!!!!!  YOU WERE GREAT!!

BTW- for the record, your first post was awesome, so that was a bad example for me to use as how you only get better with time and experience..  hehe..  :-))

Congrats on both the interview and the continued success on AR with those little gold stars!  You GO girl!  I have been interviewed and feel SO self-conscious piror to the interview, then while doing the interview, am relaxed!  THEN, I SEE the show and am HORRIFIED at how 'southern' I speak and how OLD I look!!  I'll take the writing ANY DAY!!!

In a way, I can relate.  I do a lot of in person networking.  At first it was EXTREMELY hard to stand up for 30 seconds and say quickly what I did.  Then giving 10-15 minutes speeches, YUK!  Now I still do them on a regular basis with out the same trepidation.  I still don't like it, and still uncomfortable, but not as much as my first few times!

Dr. Brad: I stand corrected. Maybe what you said was not to EXPECT to be very good.

Like you even remember my first blog.....YOU were the fixer upper blogger if I remember correctly.... famous for the wall of words.

You are such an inspiration, and your enthusiam is so contagious. Thank you again for giving me the logic to understand my fear, and the confidence to move forward. It worked and I did it.

PS and thank you for helping me get all the Localism stuff. On to Cruising the Creek.....

Roland: Well, we live in a mortgage crisis, and I am a mortgage blogger. Isn't it amazing how the media is looking to bloggers to help them report the news. You could say I am in the right place at the right time.

Deborah: I think Diane Sawyer is beautiful and the Barbara Walters has had an amazing life. Both of these ladies look so elegant and relaxed in front of the camera. Can you blame me for aspiring to be like them? Thank you for the compliments.

Janet, that is a perfect illustration of how we can improve. First a feature on your first blog, it took months for me to learn to write. I hate being in front of the camera too. Some of my AR/Twitter friends use seemic day in and day out. I bought a camera........................never used it.

So you have inspired me, with Brad's words to start there, amongst friends and get comfortable with the camera.

That is very cool how you are becoming the definite local expert and others are noticing it!  If ya need some advice on being on video, search Brad's blog for Mr. Scribble...he gave awesome advice & tips!

Emily: Thanks. Love Nashville. Both my parents were born and raised there and they are the sweetest people ever (in Calif now but Southern to the bone)

Jeremy: I will definately go to Mr. Scribble. I had already thought that maybe I could research AR for some sort of advice for being on camera.

Kathleen: Please remember AR was MUCH smaller when I started blogging (Spring of 2007). A newcomer was much more easily noticed, and the feature page was much more like a family conversation going on.

I knew nothing about being involved in an on line community, had no idea what the star meant, I just had a serious case of writing withdrawal (always loved writing, had not done it in years) It never occurrred to me that you blog for business, blog for features, or blog for SEO.

In fact when I got comments I just stared at the computer and said "You mean people READ this stuff?" LOL The most thrilling thing of all was that I had READERS....every writers dream. That is still the most thrilling thing to me...I love comments.

I guess they noticed a little green blogger had arrived on the scene.

But I thank you for those compliments.

Dawn: I hide my fear well...but got more relaxed as the interview progressed. I put my glasses on in the end and I notice they must have liked the Sarah Palin look.

S & D: No one on the air is cuter than Diane Sawyer, but I do love you for saying that.

Diane: One thing good is you are not given that much time to think about it. You say yes, and they are in the company parking lot in like an hour. It is the news and that's the way it works.

Missy: I almost didn't write this because I still find this interview a little embarassing. But then I realized Brad's advice might help someone else (like you) and I knew I had to.

I am so happy that you feel compelled to begin in front of the camera. Brad firmly believes that all bloggers need to get over this fear, because video is the wave of the future.

So best of luck to you, and congrats on your decision!

Judi: No one should have to go through the pain of being famous if there is no fortune attached. Maybe there are people who get a kick out being a high profile kind of person, but I can't imagine this ever out weighing the benefits of privacy.

Liz: Thank you. I will accept any comment that compares me to my idol Diane Sawyer...

Now Dr. Brad: Here I am trying to slink back into being a faceless writer of blogs instead of a media expert and you put that pciture here. I guess the next time you come you will arrive with your flip cam????? Then that picture would not have me in it because I would be hiding under the desk.

Baby steps, baby steps.......

I love the symbolism of the mortgage calculator pushed aside and the pad of paper poised to take notes about Localism.
