We all know what today is...

I'll try not to get too mushy and I definitely won't show any pictures...but we all remember.

I have three cousins who are FDNY and were there that morning and I want to thank them.  For getting up and getting to work and doing your job.  For running into the burning building instead of doing what instinct tells you and running the other direction and to many, many of your comrades for making the ultimate sacrifice and not returning to their families.  For doing what you could under terrible circumstances to help, calm and encourage the people of your great city.

The oldest of these cousins was acting Captain that day.  His squad was one of the first responders.  He said that he sent up 48 of his best men and only two came down that day.  The two were in the stairwell and were helping a handicapped lady get down the stairs.  They never made it farther up with the rest of this crew.  To hear him explain this story is so moving and frightening you know that his life (as well as many others) will never be the same.

My husband is also a Fire Fighter...so, I want to thank him also.  For serving our great city and for always putting the welfare and safety of the people around you first.

So, today, tomorrow, next week when you run across a public servant (Fire, Police, EMS, etc.) shake their hand, pat them on the back or just say thank you.  I know it means so much to hear that affirmation and that people still remember.

Shelia-I stumbled across this post while reading your comment on Adam's tribute. It doesn't seem possible that it has been 7 yrs since that tragic, life altering day. Your story of the 2 men that survived that day helping a handicapped lady downstairs is one I believe I remember hearing about at the time. It's funny how things that happened on that day stick with you. Even though I didn't know anyone personally from that tragedy. So many things that happened that day will never leave you completely and shouldn't regardless of what level you were personally affected. So many brave men and women went to work that day as usual and never came home. Even though I didn't lose anyone I knew personally. Whenever I think of the events of that day and that isn't just on the anniversary day. It makes me so very sad but also angry that there are people in this world that are filled with such evil and hate that they could not only do this but rejoice in it as well. I pray and I know so many of us do that we never have to experience anything like that ever again. thank you so much for sharing your story on this 7th year of remembering.
