It's smart to consider resale value when buying a house, especially if real estate is part of your plan for building wealth. For some, however, the quality of life provided by a certain neighborhood, or a house that just "feels right", is more important than getting a bargain. While it's good to have a plan, sometimes plans go awry and you may be living in the house you buy longer than you expected. So, if it makes financial sense to buy the house you love, go for it.
You are right on target. Finding a house that you love is much more important than finding a deal!
Colleen, Very well said. It's nice to find a good deal on a home, but not at the cost of getting a good house for the deal.
You offer very sound advice in this post. I have seen buyers ignore advice time and time again, only to come back to me down the road saying that they wished they had bought the house they loved rather than saving a few dollars and buying the house that they didn't like as much but could buy for less.
Great wisdom Colleen - from the sound of your bio, you have good experience for thinking about the future value to advise your clients. At the end of the day, it's about a "home" not a deal.
I've always personally bought a home because I loved it, not because it was a bargain, and fortunately, the resale value has always been excellent.
