What's in your attic?

Attic pic

This was a picture to note the un-insulated attic door hatch cover, something I see on a majority of my imspections.  There's also the missing J-box covers, missing romex connectors, etc., pretty common stuff.

However, something not so common in an attic are big blue barrels. Yes, those barrels were full.  Full of what? The outside label indicated the contents as being HYDROCHLORIC ACID!!!  I have no idea why they were up there, how they got there, and why someone would have two barrels of hydrochloric acid in their attic!  They were resting on 4- 2 x 12 planks lying across the ceiling joists.  The buyers were concerned about some cracking in the ceiling below, I wonder why!!! And I wonder why and how some people function the way they do, it's sometimes downright scary.

It's always an interesting profession, to say the least!  I never did find out why they were up there. Does anyone out else store hazardous chemicals in the attic?  Maybe you could enlighten me.

Have a great weekend!

Not just why, but how did they get full barrels up there.  Interesting post.  If you find out why let us know.

Jack- If you notice in the back right corner there is an opening that's above the stairwell.  I'm assuming that's how they accomplished this feat. Nonetheless, it would have been an interesting thing to watch. Maybe they pumped it in through the gable window, by the local chemical convenience store truck???  The clients didn't even seem real concerned when I called them on a follow up, they just kind of laughed about it.  The sellers claimed they didn't know it was up there.

Robert- Amazing, and crazy.

Joshua,

Great post and find. It is truly amazing at the things that people store in their attic.

You never do know what you are going to find in attics. HCL makes my wives ugly Christmas stuff seem harmless.

I can think of all sorts of things to do with hydrochloric acid since I have a chemistry background. However, I can't think of anything to do with it in the attic. Hmmmmmm. LOL

I beleive most people would know better . they probably forgot to relabel the barrels and they were using them for Storage of clothes or items they didnt want mice to get in to . I had a home that did the same thing a year ago . the lid was not secured opend it to find that it was full of magaizines .the wieght would be the issue . did you suggest they remove them . or how did thye end up handling this problem /.

Joshua,

Great find. I have two initial thoughts...

First is that if the barrel actually contained Hydrochloric acid, the home may have been used, or was gearing up to be used, as a Meth Lab. HCL is a common chemical associated with Meth labs.

Second, where there any signs of the roof leaking, active or prior? They may have been placed to catch the leak, and the homeowner never thought about how to remove them once they were full.
