Stop the Nonsense

By
Real Estate Agent with ADT Security Services

There have been many articles written about the growing multicultural market in the U.S.  Are you kidding?    How about the fact that this country has been multicultural, since its discovery?  British, Spaniards, and Native Americans just to name a few.

All of these articles are about differences among cultures and how to connect with other values and customs.  Why? Are they going to change?  Are we?  I don't think so.  Sure we can be phony, but people see through that bologna.  Why not focus on our profession and the tasks at hand?  Wouldn't things be simpler, more comfortable, and more professional if we could just move beyond it all and do our job?

Take a look around at a diner and watch the wait staff.  The professional server approaches every table in the exact same manner: polite, courteous, kind, and with a smile.  They connect with friendliness and focus on serving their client's needs.  They are fast, accurate, and knowledgeable about their market.  Realtors should have or be developing these same traits.  After all, the restaurant business has more referral and repeat business than any other industry.

Instead of concentrating on people's differences, why not the similarities?  It seems to work for the most common service industry.

In every point in history, people have needed to be reminded to accept and assimilate newcomers.  It is a pracice that must always be promoted...unfortunately.

Ardell - I do accept newcomers.  I am saying that we are all the same in most ways and that we should focus on that not the differences.  Thanks for your response.

I agree, everyone should work together to achieve the same goal.  We would be better off if we didn't waste time and just worked together to get the job done... no matter what it is.

We all can do better at what we do, especially if we remenmber we are a service provider. treat everyone the same and business will continue to grow. Time wasted is time lost.

Richard,

You have to focus on the similarities but you also have to figure out how to work the differences as well. Being treated the same is a good thing, but if your Realtor understands where you are coming from that is an even better thing.

Good topic,

Shailesh - thanks for you comments.  I still believe treating people differently either to connect or separate is wrong.

Well, we keep harping about wanting an equal and colorblind society...but in the same breath we talk about celebrating diversity and differences.  You can't have both, people.

I would prefer equal, myself, since as a Southerner I immediately have 100 IQ points deducted when I open my mouth.

Leigh - Love the IQ statement because there is a lot of truth in it.   I grew up in central Illinois and when I moved to the Chicago area, all of the kids called me "Hick."  I thought it was pretty funny that they thought I grew up so far south when it was only 3 hours by car.

While we are all different, and should be able to revel in our differences, it would be great if we could be treated equally by others!

Perhaps we should all wear a blind fold for a day in our jobs.  Then maybe we would all realize that everyone should be treated exactly the same.  Good point Rich.

Great Topic,   - definitely looking at peoples similarities instead of their differences is the most advantageous way of doing business.      It gives you a more positive outlook,  and that reflects on the way you are perceived.
