Howdy Folks,
Wow, Tonight was an awesome night for walking the beach. Sunny sky and no chance for rain, a light breeze and it was low tide. Tonight I went to the beach on Little Hickory which is the northern most end of Bonita Beach.
Since we have had two Major storms pass through the Gulf of Mexico (Gustav & Ike), the beaches of Southwest Florida have gotten quite a bit of action. When Gustav went by the storm waves washed many shells up on our beaches and added additional sand to them. When Ike went by, it washed all the extra sand and shells which Gustav gave us and put them back into the gulf.
The interesting aspect to this is the current beach conditions at Little Hickory. Hurricane Ike washed what looks like half of the sand which was on the beach out into the gulf, but not in the normal way. Typically during low tide along beaches, when the tide goes out it will expose a sand bar about 20 to 30 yrs out from the beach. Between the sand bar and the beach is a trench which can vary from 12 to 24 inches deep. Well, what Ike did was to wash the sand from the beach into this trench and make a very wide flat area which was roughly 1 inch below the surface.
Here is a couple pictures....

You can see the wide flat area out to the little rougher water. In the picture below, it shows the waves crashing. What was odd was that these waves would crash and then immediately flatten out..

Also in normal fashion I did a bit of shell collecting. All of the shells were found way up on the beach from where Gustav had left them earlier in the week. These shells are of different varieties than those I posted last night. As I mentioned in that blog, some beaches you will find different varieties of shells.

Here are the shells found tonight. Starting at the 12:00 O'clock position going clockwise
1. Venus Sunray
2. Florida Fighting Conch
3. Florida Fighting Conch
4. Giant Heart Cockle
5. Calico Clam
6. Sailor's Ear

Here are a few more shells starting at 12:00 O'clock and going clockwise ....
1. Common Fig
2. True Tulip
3. Angle Wing
4.-6. Lightning Whelk
This last picture is of the sandy flat at the entrance to the pass just at the north end of the beach at Little Hickory

Hope you enjoyed the views.
