There are many reasons why I don't work in the rain and your lawn care provider shouldn't either. Some are for my own reasons to protect myself and my investment. And several are to protect my clients, their lawns and their investments in the beautification of their lawn.

I will cover my reasons here 1st:

1. The equipment is not designed to be used in the rain for the most part. I don't know many who would be thrilled about ruining a $12,000 machine to make a very small fraction of that amount, because remember many warrenties do not cover stupidity lol.

2. Bagging lawn clippings is a pain in the butt when they are wet because they stick to everyting and clog up the shoot and mower deck. And often times do not fully bag which can make the lawn look bad.

3. If I get sick from working in the rain we all lose out. I am not able to work and make any money, your lawn won't get mowed.

4. I do not enjoy possibly tearing someones lawn up simply to make a buck. Lawns aren't really designed to be mowed when wet (when the ground is wet the roots are easily loosened and you can actually rip the grass right out of the lawn quite easily).

5. Mowing on wet slopes is dangerous as lawn mowers can easily slip or slide on wet lawns, resulting in tearing up of the lawn or possible injury. (Homeowners who hire uninsured companies/ persons can actually be sued if an uninsured person is injured while working at their home... always make sure anyone who works on your home is insured!)

Ok, now for the reasons that are really important... the reasons I do not mow in the rain or when the ground is wet for my clients:

1. More often than not a lawn that is mowed when wet will have a higher tendancy to "clump" and look nasty (the grass clippings clump/ stick together to make big ugly clumps of dead grass on the lawn instead of spreading out evenly under normal mowing conditions which can build up thatch(dead grass in the lawn) un evenly as well).

2. When the ground it can get ruts in it quite easily. Ruts are caused primarily from driving/ riding heavy equipment over wet ground. While these ruts generally can be fixed by rolling the lawn why would anyone want to have more of an expense than otherwise needed for something so easily preventable.

3. This is actually also one of my own personal reasons for not mowing when the ground is wet.... I do not enjoy tearing up someones lawn to make a buck (same as #4 of my personal reasons).

4. This I feel is probably the most important one of all and really sums each and every one of these reasons in one..... My clients deserve the best possible care and service possible, afterall they pay for a service and I would be cheating them if it could be done better.

Good thing you don't live in Houston Texas! Lawns there are going to take some time to dry out! Luckily here I just lost 2 trees and a bunch of limbs and leaves!

Raylene- Yeah we got a ton of rain even up here from the other hurricanes over the last few days and will probably get some from IKE also next week if it makes it up this way. We got so much rain my pond over flowed, and I probably won't work at all this week mowing. I am glad to hear your damages weren't super bad down there unlike many others.

Chris, all of your reasons for not working in the rain are very valid. Plus I'm sure your customers would prefer a better end result for their money.

Maybe you should think of a secondary business that you could run out of your house on rainy days?

Lara- The 1st thing I always hear when I let a new customer know we won't be mowing their normal day (or like this week probably at all) their response is always, "But my neighbors are mowing" or "already mowed". However they completely understand when I explain these things and that the normal homeowners mower may be a few hundred pounds, or they have a light push mower..... nothing like my nearly 1,000 lb mower, which can really do alot of damage if the ground is heavily saturated, and many typical homeowners do not have the knowledge of the damage they are possibly doing even with the lighter mowers like myself (quite honestly I don't think alot of lawn care companies even have the level of knowledge about their work like I do... that or they don't care, as some were mowing on Monday after 3 days of pouring rain and flooding, I am still flooded lol).

Chris,

Well I was beginning to worry about you, things just aren't the same on AR without your smartass!!  lol

That saltwater fish stuff can run into some serious money, the fish are soooooooo expensive too.

Glad to see you made it back on AR.

NJ- My dad always told me its better to be a smartass than a dumbass lol. But yeah I have been fine, just busy.... hopefully I don't get Ashlees sickness she has right now though lol.

Yeah the setup I was looking at doing brand new was going to run several thousand lol.... Luckily I found one that will be a small fraction of that that has been set up and running for 5 years a guy wants to get rid of pretty cheap so hopefully he will still have it when I get the time & money to go get it lol

Chris, I've always been a smartass, just can't help myself *lol* If Ashlee has a cold/flu like thing right now, stay away from her. I have it too and it's contagious as hell. Ive had it two days and I'm still thinking I might just die!! *lol* I think the grandson brings home all the germs then gives them to me!!! I seem to catch everything. The fish deal sounds good, you better grab it up before someone else does.

NJ- Same here. Yeah I think I'm already getting it....GRRRRRRRRR. Yup, just 1 reason to not send kids to school in America J/K :-D.... My sister has been working at a daycare for about a year now and she has had a cough since lol

7:06pm • #12

Chris,

You couldn't pay me enough to work in a daycare!!!!  YIKES   All those sneezes and snotty noses that have to be wiped.  I did my time with all that crap years and years ago with my kids and nieces and nephews (seemed I was the family daycare) since I chose to stay home and work there until my kids started school.

Call me insane, I have no idea why I agreed to help with the (step) grandson.  Maybe it's cuz his mom is a useless waste of air ?

Hope you don't get this crude going around, it lays ya up for awhile.

Tell Ashlee to make ya chicken soup with LOTS of garlic in it, might help.  :P
