What Do I Do With Left-over Paint?

Home painters, such as A Finishing Touch Painters, LLC (www.aftpainters.com), often leave any excess paint with their customers for future touch-ups. New home builders also typically leave excess paint with the homeowners for future touch-ups. If you are painting for the first time and have leftover builder paint, or if you are repainting and still have old touch-up paint, you are probably wondering how to dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. Below are a few suggestions from A Finishing Touch Painters, LLC (www.aftpainters.com) on how to minimize excess paint and how to properly dispose of old paint in an environmentally friendly way (Go Green!):

First and foremost, try to only buy the amount of paint you need. Painting companies, such as A Finishing Touch Painters, LLC (www.aftpainters.com) typically buy the least amount of paint possible. The first step in environmentally friendly disposal is to buy only what you need. If you are not using a professional painting company, we suggest using an online calculator to determine the amount of paint needed for your project.

Save a small amount of paint, in each color, for future touch-ups. If you have more than you believe you will need of each color, try consolidating the excess paint into one or two cans for disposal and save the needed paint in smaller amounts. For the paint you are saving, cover the can of paint with a layer of plastic wrap prior to replacing the can cover. When replacing the can cover, be sure to pound the lid down securely.

Next, call your local waste collection company to determine if they accept dried latex paints. If they do, open the cans you wish to dispose of in an area away from animals or children and allow them to dry. Once they paint is completely dry, you may throw the paint cans away in the trash.

If you wish to speed the drying process, or if your local waste collection company requires solid form paint, try filling the paint cans with kitty litter or concrete mix to solidify the paint before discarding it.

Seal Oil based (alkyd based) paints in the can and store them safely away from heat sources until you find a waste-disposal site. If you do not know of any waste disposal sites, contact your local fire department to determine where to dispose of the paint.

Most importantly, never pour paint, stain, or any coating in storm sewers, down household drains, or down any other water source that may contaminate the environment or your watershed.

For more information on how to dispose of paint in an environmentally friendly way, contact A Finishing Touch Painters, LLC (www.aftpainters.com) and we will be happy to help with recommendations.
