chatfield state park littleton co dogsThe weather is starting to turn here in the Denver area - cool crisp mornings and evenings are still warm enough on most days for shorts & T-Shirts.  So before the weather completely turns we decided to take a much needed adventure to Chatfield State Park.

This wasn't our ordinary visit with fishing in the south ponds, or a picnic on the beach or an afternoon on a boat or a hike on the trails - this time we decide to bring our dog for his first swim! It was also an excellent time for me to share an afternoon with my son.

Chatfield has a wonderful Dog Training Area that is an off-leash area for dogs and includes a very popular pond for the dogs to swim.  I found out quickly that my 6 month old is a complete natural.  A full swim off the bat and was retrieving in minutes.  (Side note - Dogs must be leashed in all other areas of Chatfield State Park.)

The pond is extremely popular and I can see why - the dogs love it.

If you have recently moved to the Denver area, specifically the south Denver suburbs and you have a dog, you have to check out Chatfiled.

Chatfield State Park is only about an 8 minute drive from my home on the west side of Highlands Ranch.  It is easily accessible from all parts of the Denver South suburbs and it is right off of C470.  The dog training area is located on the north side of the park and will be most easily access from the Wadsworth entrance to the park.

Chatfield is a State Park, so there is a daily entrance fee of $7.  You can also choose to purchase an annual pass for the Colorado State Parks for $60, which if you plan on going often, is well worth it.

We plan on heading back to the Chatfield Dog Training Area a few more times before the water is too cold.

John - this will be our first winter with our pup - and after watching him love to chase rain - I am sure he will love the snow even more.

Steve-it's a dog's life!

But a good one: our Dachshund Bear thinks the whole neighborhood is his dog park and of course, all the local rabbits are his to chase.

Everywhere.

Great bog about a local place folks can have fun!

Steve -  Right you are.  My son loved it as much as the dog.  We are just starting the rabbit chasing, he wasn't fast enough until now - they better watch out.

Steve, sounds like you and your son had a great day together with the dog. Looked like fun. I don't remember this area when I lived in Denver but it sure looks inviting and dog lovers will certainly be glad to know that the best darn Realtor in Denver has just let them know where to go for a day of fun.

Steve Chatfield State Park looks like a great recreational area. We have a State Park in my home town as well. As usual you have done a great job featuring a local Denver attraction.

Gena - Chatfield became a state park in 1976 - here is a link for more info on its history.  http://parks.state.co.us/Parks/Chatfield/Publications/ChatfieldHistory.htm  Its bascially far southwest Littleton, but there was very little development in that area when you were here.

Bill - It is very nice, we are planning on heading over there again this week while its warm still.

Just wanted to add one more option for this that I failed to mention, Chatfield pays entrance per car but you can enter the park by bike or on foot too.  There is a maintained trail, the Mary Carter Trail, that leads into Chatfield from South Platte Reservoir and South Platte River.  Enter the park via the South Platte Reservoir and head to the trail at the river and head west.  Follow the signs and you'll know when you are in the dog area when everyone starts taking their dogs off the leashes.  Just be careful of the bikers on the trail.... I didn't add this previously as I was not certain how long of a walk it was, but we did it this weekend and it is very manageable.  It may be a little long for very small children.
