After becoming the national basketball champions this year, there probably aren't too many people who haven't heard of the University of Kansas, aka KU.  There are several other colleges in the area within a 5 to 40 minute drive so there is quite a bit of student housing that is needed; especially in Lawrence Kansas.

What many students interested in off campus student housing have found out is that they can help pay off the landlord's mortgage or they can buy a place (either on their own or with the help of parents) and build up some equity for themselves.  Lawrence Kansas real estate is the most expensive real estate in the whole state of Kansas.  That also means it has the best rate of return on appreciation per year and is the fastest area in the state to be able to get a property SOLD when you are ready to move on.

Appreciation usually will be 5% to 7% per year.  Therefore, students that have owned their home for one year and SOLD rather than renting for one year will usually come out with money in their pocket.  After two years of ownership, students have SOLD their home and had $5000 to $10000 in proceeds that they could use as a down payment on a home at the next place they go to.
