Las Vegas has become more than just a vacation destination for Hawaiians, many have adopted it as home. The diversity of the Pacific Islanders is a perfect fit for the Melting Pot of the Vegas Valley. Being the largest and fastest growing city of the last century, the swelling population combines a blend of both domestic regional, and international cultures.

The Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club has been very active and growing since 1989. They promote the traditions of native Hawaiians here in the valley and share them, allowing us mainlanders to have a taste. This year they held their 18th annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho'olaule'a - Pacific Islands Festival, one of several events they hold or participate throughout the year. The 2 day free celebration was held for the 2nd year at the Henderson Events Plaza, downtown on Water St. at City Hall.

The main street was closed between the Henderson Convention Center and the park at the Justice Court building to allow for more room and easy access to the second performance stage. The entertainment ran practically non-stop, with a sampling of so many of the island's music and dances, and colorful native costumes. The male and female performers were of all ages, and the passing of their heritage and culture to future generations ensured, as one I saw was only 5 years old. For a little sample, here's a video from last a previous festival, brought to you by Las Vegas' Aloha Valley and 9th Island Productions.

When I say the LVHCC offers a taste of Hawaii, I meant TASTE! There where a large number of food booths with an array of Island delicacies that you could purchase...and the crowds were lined up for their samples. There were also a number of refreshing beverages and treats available, including the club's generous shaved ice.

Then there were the merchandise vendors. A huge assortment of crafts and products with that island flair. Everything imaginable was there, from clothing, jewelry and accessories, to home decor. Even within these booths you could once again see the diversity of the cultures that make up the Pacific Islanders.

I think you can find something for almost every culture in Vegas and that is part of the charm of Vegas. At times it is almost like going to a worlds fair and they have something for almost everyone.

This one does sound like fun though for islanders and mainlanders alike!
