Florida Homeschoolers Meet With Jeff Atwater- Florida Senator

By

Florida homeschoolers met with Jeff Atwater our Florida Senator at a meet and greet last week. I drove to Boca Raton for this meeting. I was very pleased with the outcome of the meeting and I even discussed Real Estate issues and the Florida State Documentary Stamp Tax issue and confusion with him. That will be for a later post.

We met at one of the homeschooling family's homes. The home was packed full of parents and children. This was a great opportunity for homeschooled kids to learn about the political process. They had tables there to sign up to help with campaigning for Jeff Atwater who is running for his last term as Senator in the Florida State Senate. Florida is a term limit state so there are no lifers here. This is good because Senators can then work for their principles and values more.

Also, here in Florida the pay is very low. Jeff Atwater is married and has 4 children. There is no way you can support a family with the salary. Jeff is a banker by trade. He felt in his heart that he needed to serve on a political level. Congressmen and women in Florida only make $29,000 a year to serve. That is one of the reasons so many attorneys run for office. They are able to leave their practice for short periods of time.

Children and teens of all ages asked very good questions. One 8 year old girl asked Jeff, what is the difference between a Republican and a Democrat. It was so cute and the whole audience just gasped, like, how do you answer that to an 8 year old!  Jeff Atwater handled her question so kindly and explained his answer in such a way for her to understand. There were all kinds of questions  from the youth.

Most of us parents were interested in updates in regards to our property taxes and homeschooling issues. Florida is a homeschool friendly state with Governor Crist even declaring Home Education week.

Our concerns are of the erosion of parental rights in our country. Most parents in our communities homeschool for religious freedom reasons, moralitly reasons and nowadays- safety reasons. With more and more government control over the family and decisions that families make in their homes it is only logical that we as parents become concerned. If you would like to find out more about how the UN and the global community is threatening our parental rights please read this very important post I wrote about this subject.

Jeff assured us that he is looking out for the rights of parents and our rights to homeschool. There will always be those that are against what we do and who will try to stop us so we must be on our toes and be proactive in making sure our rights to homeschool our children remain as they are today.

If you are interested to know how your tax dollars are wasted and spent, read the following:

  • Property Taxes in Florida have gone up 88% in the last 5 years with skyrocketing property values but the income levels did not go up.

This is what local governments did not take into consideration as they lavishly spent those tax dollars with no regard to the fact that what goes up must come down.
They also were not taking into consideration the 3% cap on property taxes as they were so happily spending the money.

  • The school districts spending increased by 176% int the last 5 years.
  • The cities spending increased by 105% and the counties increased by 89%.
  • These governental bodies were spending money 5 times faster that the household income in our state.

These entities complained to Jeff Atwater about that they are not going to have to curb spending! Jeff's answer was, why were you not saving for a rainy day? Why did you spend all the money?

In contrast the state of Florida has a 72 Billion dollar budget which they reduced to 66 Billion dollars.

They saw it coming and reduced their spending.

This year they will only be 1.8 Billion dollars shy of a balanced budget, but that they will be taking out of their savings so there not be a deficit.

The state of Florida does not get any of your PROPERTY TAX dollars! That was amazing to me to realize. I guess I should have noticed that when I look on my tax bill but I just did not match it up.

Your property tax dollars go to your county, your towns and cities and your public school districts.

Now we all know that before the boom, we had schools, we had towns and we had counties. We had police and firemen, we had county services and garbage pickup.

Let us put that in perspective again;

  • we have no state income tax,
  •  no sales tax on food
  • and only a 6% state sales tax on non food items.

California is one of the highest taxing states.
They tax you for everything there. They have income tax there. Their property taxes have increased as well. Now, even with all that money coming in California now has a 15 Billion dollar deficit!

Here are the local updates on tax issues in our area:

Village of Wellington Florida Tax update

Palm Beach county Florida Tax update

Realtors Speak out against higher taxes.

The people called for property taxes to get lowered. We voted yes to lower taxes on the state ballot in January. Now the towns and our county officials are calling Jeff Atwater begging him not to get any more tax relief because they are having to cut back. Well, they should have thought of that during the boom. He does not work for the town managers, he works for the people and he will continue to fight to lower the property taxes.

Here is a snippet of Jeff Atwater speaking to our homeschool group.

Fred- We have been taking action. The supreme court just dissed our property tax amendment on our November ballot. That was a low blow to us who have been fighting for this. Only once in 22 years does the constitution committee meet and that was this year. They wrote this amendment very well, but the courts did not like it! It would have removed the school tax from our property taxes and we would have had an increase in a sales tax by 1 penny so that all people would pay for schools instead of just the homeowners. Fair and balanced, well, the courts are not!

Jason- Thank you! That is a very nice compliment.

I use a flip video camera. I wrote some posts about it, look under my tags for flip video. IT is my favorite tool that I take everywhere with me. I take the video with it, just plug and play.

I have a very high end Sony DVD camcorder that takes excellent still shots. I use that camera for all my still shots. I use it also for long family video because it records on the Dvds. But it is too hard to learn how to upload and edit and it takes too long so I don't use that camera for my blogging.

I love photography as you will see in my high end listing posts that I have on my blog. Katerina

Two of my sisters live in Florida and can't wait to move away.  Everything goes around but the taxes and insurance are problematic for many so I hope relief is in sight.  I was lucky to enjoy Florida back in the 60's!

NIce overview, Katerina, with good information for taxpayers. Too bad the tax amendment got thrown out. I know a number of homeowners in FL who were looking forward to the possiblity.

As far as taxes in CA. Yep, we got 'em, lots of 'em. I won't even comment on the budget issues, or the water crisis.

Katerina, nice job.  We're jealous of your taxes in FL.  You mean you're a home schooling parent in addition to all of the real estate and other things you do?

Katerina, soooo, why am I not surprised that you home school? I read your other post about your smart daughter with an IQ of 140......since you home schooled her, you must be purty smart Katerina. So your little one, you home school him too? ;-)

AND your taxes are incredible - very low....even compared to Arizona. No state tax? Amazing. Not in debt? Very amazing. ;-)

Susie- It is relative. We have no income tax. Prices are low. My son just came back from working in PA for the summer and he said that over one third of his check was taken out for taxes. Here that would not have happened. Then he said the prices of gas were higher, food was very expensive, in fact, all goods and services were more expensive. That is why I say it is relative. Our insurance went from 3500 a year to this year being only 1600. So we are seeing progress. My property taxes went from 3600 a year to 2200 a year this past year. I have no service tax on my real estate transactions and no small business taxes eating away my profits.

Missy- Come on, do you think I should stir it up here on my blog? Hmmm.

He was very good, polite and tactful.

This is what Jeff said to the girl:

Republicans believe that decisions about raising a family, religion, schooling and so on are made in the home. They believe in less government involvement in our lives and in family's lives. They believe that government should stay out of the way of businesses.

Democrats believe the government should take part in those decisions that are being made in the home and that they want more government involvement in our lives and lives of businesses and that they also need us to pay for it in taxes.

There you have it!

Soon I will give you the link to what do I really think! ( as Mike Saunders keeps pushing me to say).:)

Jeff- It is an interesting thing with deficits and budgets when it comes to governments. The taxes being generated no matter how much are brought in never are even with how much the spending is. Hmmm, Florida balanced it's budget, that is proof that other states can do that too.

Taxing the people only creates more spending on the part of the governments. You can only be taxed so much before  it just does not pay to work anymore! I am a native Californian but I just don't know how people make it financially there anymore. I lived in Northern California and we did want to have Southern CA take our water. I remember those battles!

Charlie- I have been homeschooling for 28 years. Full time agent, full time wife and mother, and a writer, speaker and real estate coach. Yep, I have a blessed life. I am passionate about learning and growing in intelligence. All my kids are grown now except our blessing child who just turned 6.

Jeremy- I am having fun doing the video. The Mixpo has so much I want to add to the videos but in a hurry it is great to just get it up on the post. I did get your email. I am not too busy to talk to you. I got sick and had no voice for 10 days so I did not have the energy to talk more than absolutely necessary. We can catch up next week if that is OK.

Teri- No Debt, no income tax and low taxes, no small business tax, no service tax. That is Florida!

Yes, I homeschooled my daughter and all my kids. And I homeschool my little one. It is so much more fun to homeschool now. When my other set were small there were no computers, no fax, no cool learning stuff like they have now. Our curriculum is so rich these days.

It is in the genes. My mother was a genius too with an IQ over 160. She has a standing scholarship at Stanford University until she was killed at the age of 42. I do not think my IQ is that high. But I did get straight A's in school, won spelling bees, grammar strengths and have a great retention ability.

Hearing of property taxes going down?  Not a familiar topic in NJ...  Everyone here is so frustrated with our taxes.  They are exiting our great state to head for NC or FL.  We live in a fabulous state to raise kids, but not for retirement.  Thanks,  ~ JC

PS   I homeschooled too!
