Ricardo/Brian,
Your message is right on. The biggest issue I see on most blogs are that people are using it to sell things. Most people who read blog posts, aren't trying to be sold something. Rather, they are looking for a solution to a problem or advice. That said, I don't think there is anything wrong with injecting a product or service into a blog post, just as long as it is done correctly.
As an example, on the topic of email marketing. To be successful on your email newsletter campaign, you need to ensure that the message of your email newsletter is very clear and is "above the fold". Most people (approx. 80%) view their email using the preview pane in their email client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc). Most email clients disable images (by default) in the preview pane. All that said, it is important that the main body of the message is towards the top of the email message and that all images in the email message contain ALT attributes. Essentially, preview your message in your preview pane without images enabled before you send it out. You can also utilize Lynx (text based browser) to test your email campaign. SimplyConnect, a service provided by EmailFlyerAds.com ensures that your email newsletters are "above the fold" compliant.
Yes, it is a plug for EmailFlyerAds.com, but there is plenty of useful information there.
