Merry-Go Round at Oaks-Park-Portland, OregonI decided a few days in Portland would be a nice trip for the family over spring break so we all loaded up and headed over the mountain. One of our favorite places to go is Oaks Park. This amusement park opened in 1905 and has been a family favorite ever since.

Left- This is a picture of the original carousel which has been (restored).

There are many things to do at Oaks Park, so plan on the whole day. Prices are VERY reasonable and it easy to see why families and children love to come here. There are rides for big kids, little kids and everything in between. My girls really enjoyed the roller coasters (2), the bumper cars, the Screamin Eagle (Yikes), and the Round-Up. I enjoyed the kiddie train and the go-karts. There is also a separate indoor skating rink.

Midway at Oaks Park, Portland, OregonIf the weather is nice, you can pack your own lunch and enjoy it by the river at one of the many picnic tables. You may also plan a birthday party here, either at the facility or at a site of your choosing along the river. Along the midway are couple of places to eat, all very reasonable. Here, you can find cotton candy and ice cream, hot chocolate and icees or a burger and fries amongst other things.

If you are planning on coming to Portland with your kids, make Oaks Park a part of your vacation plan. You will not regret it.

Kelli - I love Sellwood (the area where Oaks Park is) I lived there for the 12 years I was in Portland - you must have driven right by my old house on Spokane St to get there... it is a great place for kids and so is Sellwood Park with a great public pool.

Thesa-

I am sure I drove past your old digs...we showed up two hours early and had to find something to do until it opened. Asyou know, it's always worth the wait. Thanks for your comment : )
