Bank CrumblingThe Economy is in the news all day long. Which Bank is going under today? How is the Government going to step in and Solve our Problems? Wait a minute - How is the Government going to Solve OUR Problems? Is the government really responsible for us -or are We responsible for ourselves?

For the past 4 years, I have had a "Solve the World's Problems" Summit during lunch at least once a week with a buddy of mine where we ussually divide this discussion into 3 topics:

How can my Personal Budget keep me from Feeling the Pain of this Economy?

How  can I Lessen the Pain of this Economy for others?

How does my Faith affect my Perception of these times?

Slingblade Carl

If anyone was to listen to our converstion, they may think we were a combination of Grumpy Old Men, Dave Ramsey, and Slingblade Carl (just because we enjoy saying "Mmmm hmmmmm" like him to make our points).

Anyway, back to our story - let's take this by the numbers:

  1. How can my Personal Budget keep me from Feeling the Pain of this Economy? Now some of you are already scratching your head and asking, "What is a Personal Budget?" Well the down and dirty of it is this: - you write down how much money is coming in after taxes every month and you subtract every monthly expense that comes out from large to small - ussually starting with your mortgage or rent - down to gas for the car and money for food & entertainment. Dave Ramsey and other Financial Advisors actually advize us to write the 1st check every month based on 10% of your Income to charity (Church, United Way, etc.),  the  2nd check should be 10% of your Income to your Personal Savings Account (to save for the unexpected expenses), with the rest divided up between  your monthly debts & expenses from big to small -  purposefully beginning to pay off your debt from small to large debts (Dave Ramsey calls this your Debt Snowball).                        Credit Cards Killing AmericaOkay -here is where we start our weekly discussion during our Summits: If most people (including me) started following Financial Advisors advice our country would be full of citizens who are giving to charities, have Savings for emergencies (so they won't have to use their credit cards), and have begun to pay off their debt. I think it begins with something my Grandparents called Delayed Gratification - if you are not familiar with this term, click on the link. In our society we are bombarded with commercials that play songs like "I WANT IT ALL & I WANT IT NOW" which promote our Instant Gratification culture - we want what we want when we want it and we want it NOW. That kind of mindset increases our Credit Card Debt, defeats any kind of Personal Savings Plan , and sometimes forces us to tap into our home's equity (read Broker Bryant's post about Your Home is your Castle,  NOT an ATM Machine!)
  2. How  can I Lessen the Pain of this Economy for Others? Remember up there in #1 where I told you that Financial Advisors  say it is best to write your first check every month to Charity? That's because the old Proverbs of Widom are true - Don't let the flow of money stop with you, let it flow thru you - If you were a body of water, do you want to be a stagnant pond where the water just stands still or do you want to be a River where there is a fresh supply of water everyday? These Charities -Churches, United Way, Red Cross, and countless others - help the less fortunate everyday. You could even take it a step further and tell your family that this Holiday Season during Thanksgiving and Christmas you'll be joining others in Adopting less fortunate families so they can have a good Thanksgiving and Christmas as well. The possibilities are endless when we -Not the Government -help each other.
  3. How does my Faith affect my Perception of these Economic Times? I am a believer that God is in Control no matter what is happening around me. Your Faith may help you as well. If I am completely focused on the Nightly News and I believe everything that comes from it - then I am going to perceive that everything is Doom & Gloom; however, if I am anxiously awaiting how God is going to grow my character thru these times and I am following His Wisdom - I can make it thru anything. How does your Faith help you thru these times?

America's Time Slipping AwaySo back to my Title question: How are You Allowing this Economy Affect You? Are you cutting back on wants and just taking care of needs for your family so that you can still easily afford your monthly debts? Are you still helping others? Are you still saving for emergencies? (I know -some of you are already in an emergency - but what if you had saved for it before all this mess happened? You can contact some of those charities others give to to help.) Are you relying on yourself and your Faith to bring you thru this  -or are you sitting and waiting for the government to solve your problems?

Are we going to allow this Doom and Gloom mentality anymore or are we going to revive this economy by taking care of ourselves and helping others?

Or do you think it is too far gone to do anything?

I agree we are responsible for our own destiny.  Unfortunately we get to pay for those less responsible.

Wow...killer post!  Great advice. We teach business owners to control costs (through realizing and writing out their guiding values..."does that advance or detract from my values?"), but we also teach owners to write a check to their "profit account" (the second 10% you mentioned).  Love the concepts!  Thanks for sharing.

YEA!!  What an awesome post.  YES, God is good and if we live by His principles there is such blessing.  Not that life will always be "easy"...but like you said...the events that happen TO us are FOR us... to build character, strengthen our faith, etc.!!

Well said.  You have to be on top of your game and take control of the situation and rest your worries in God's hands and the rest you need to take control and be responsible.

The first fruits of my labor -- which is 10% -- goes directly toward Jesus' work to spread the gospel. God takes care of the rest.

True, but the poor taxpayers are going to end up doing the paying for AIG and what not......we have to be responsible for our own stuff, but too much is out of our control.  Especially when CEO's are making 35 million dollars a year.... Everyone in government has their hand out......we get through it by giving thanks for what we do have -- If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it ---- that is the first rule of thumb!   The second rule is to burn the credit cards.

Mary - I agree completely - paying for those who are not responsible sucks (can i say "sucks" on AR?) - However, willingly helping those less fortunate ROCKS. (I'm pretty sure I can say "rocks")

Jason -thanks. It's just the tried and true advice our grandparents followed.

Sonja -you are an awesome cheerleader for God! Thanks.

Kim - Amen to that.

Atlanta - Give to God 1st and He'll take care of the rest - that will preach!

Ernie & Barb - You are right -there are many things and decisions beyond our control - however, the good news is God is in control especially when we feel out of control and no matter who is in the White House. Amen to your first rule of thumb -to the 2nd rule: BURN BABY BURN those credit cards!

We live well within our means.... so the high prices right now don't hurt as bad as it would for others.

My business is on pace to match or beat last year's numbers.

We are extra diligent with our budgets in case it gets worse, but otherwise living life!!!

Your blog reminds me that attitude has such a huge impact on success.  If you let the bah humbug mentality control you, you will rarily accomplish anything.  But, if you believe that today is a new day, and a new opportunity to make a positive impact in someones life, you can succeed.  I try to remain positive when I'm working on a California mortgage loan for one of my customers.  Be careful when surrounding yourself with those that always reflect on the negative, it can bring you down.

Good Post.  I hate watching TV with the Bad News.  I had breakfast at a local restaurant with another agent.  My breakfast was $4; the waitress was great so I left her a $5 tip!

Your paragraph #3 is really what caught my attention and this is what I truly believe, too.  Not everyone has yet discovered the universal truth that God is the one in control....not the government, not the president, not Wall Street, not the terrorists....there's already a plan in place for the days, weeks, months and years ahead, and if we are smart we will listen to less news, watch less TV, and focus on serving other people around us.  I also believe that this season of economic change is also beneficial in forcing people to cut back, re-prioritize, re-focus, and get back to basics....which are all good things!  Life, even during stressful time, is too short and too precious to waste worrying!

I also was reminded of the book "The Secret", whereby what we focus on and speak out loud does become our reality.  Although some of the book itself is a bit "new age" for my taste, I do know that the concepts it describes are real.  The more you focus on something, the more it comes into your life.  So I completely agree with you that we need to stop focusing on the doom and gloom, and start focusing and recovery and rebirth!

Great post, the media has been bombarding us with nothing but bad news and we have all become so caught up in the worldwide issues, we forget to take care of the one person that matters. ME!.

What a fantastic post.  It's just what I was thinking this morning out on my walk.  In fact, on my Christian radio station they mentioned the Sea of Galilee where fresh water flows into it and the sea is lively but the water that flows out of it empties into the dead sea where it sits and stagnates.  The question was will you flow into a living sea?  Or will you sit and stagnate.  I believe God has found favor with our country and our country has been giving to others but over the years to many people with greed on their minds have taken over.  God will purge what he needs to purge and bring us back to a humble country.  So, yes, I did take a little time to sit and ponder and started to stagnate but then I pushed those thoughts behind me and said "get up, get going" it's a new day and God has created it so live it.  Live, Laugh, Love!  This too shall pass.

I have never asked the goverment for a thing, they have asked me for a lot. Usually about 35% of everything to be exact. I have worked for myself my entire life, from mowing the neighborhood yards, to owning my own restaurant to running my real estate business. I could never go to a MON-FRI 9-5 job, it would kill my spirit.

Brian - I am still writing checks to charity and ignore the gloom and doom of the news reports of the economy and the down real estate market. If we think things are bad - they are. If we think life is grand despite what we hear - life is grand. Life is grand - the market it great and the economy is what it is. It's all good!

The word that made me want to read your blog was "ALLOW". I have seen proof over and over that if we simply remove  the negative from our own energy we start to allow the good things to flow in b/c it is now not blocked. Watch those who live miserable llives and listen to what they think about and ask yourself why they live those types of existences? Thanks for a great post!

I get confused. I have never been so busy in my life, with customers. I am told that everything is in the dumps. I see young kids, with almost no money still getting financing. Yet I am told nobody can get financing. I think much of it has to do with perception. Sometimes you just have to work to cut your share of the pie. That involves establishing a good reputation and keeping your name out there.

Your post is excellent!!! Its hits on many different topics.. For me the important one is GOD.. Many people today are not moving with God simply because they are not willing to take small steps He placed before them. Choose to flow with God's plan. Be sensitive to the new things He is doing. Stay flexible to the Holy Spirit and know that ours is a God who directs, adjusts, moves, and corrects us. He is always working to bring us into perfection.

God Bless,

I loved your blog it is very encouraging to me at this time. My business is steady but down below my standards, my saving has tanked even my rainy day money because of the stock market. My kids have never heard the word cut back and my wife though Wal -mart was just a gas station. So in light of all that y most reports today I am lucky. But I have to blog just to keep my sanity. So I wish you well and hope you keep the god reports coming. I was telling my agents the other day that we are not going negative anymore no matter what. Then the freddie and fannie thing happened and now the AIG thing comes along.

As I read your post, I can hear Chicken Little screaming "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"  LOL  Great post, for my family personally, we are keeping our personal spending to a minimum, while still continuing to fund our investment portfolios.  You know what they say about stocks, buy low and sell high - we're hoping for long term success, not instant gratification.

We are responsible for our own results. We control our fate, not completely but to a good extent. Some will sit and moap about the economic situation while others will be pro-active and change thier own situations and adapt.

Amanda -so true -it reminds me of my devotion this morning recounting the events when Mary & Martha sent word to Jesus that "The one He loves is sick" Instead of coming right away and keeping Lazarus from dying, Jesus stayed where he was for 2 more days. Although Mary & Martha thought Jesus had come too late to make a difference, Jesus showed them that God can be Glorified in our darkest hour - Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead and proved beyond a doubt that he had not come too late - Imagine the joy of seeing your brother alive again and knowing beyond a doubt that God will never show up too late! (Sorry - I'll step back from the pulpit now)

Eleanor -You are going to love the simple advice of Dave ramsey -it's what our grandparents always followed - Whe ni took his course a few years ago I thought he was pretty rough on his DVD course, now I know he is right on target.

Mike - Exactly! that reminds me of the old riddle: If you have 2 dogs in a fight, which one is going to win? The one you have fed.

JL - perception is everything

Caren - Amen! If you fed on the negative voices of this world then those voices will rule you; however, if you feed on God's Word, His Voice will comfort you in these storms that will come.
