I went to the New York District Convention last weekend and it was a fabulous weekend. The most exciting part was I won the American Rose Society Silver Honor Medal Award - the most prestigious and the highest award at the District Level of the American Rose Society. We had a Buffet Dinner on Friday night at Batavia Racetrack with the second race dedicated to Western New York Rose Society. Members of the WNYRS made a blanket and draped it over the winning horse after the race. We had fun at the racetrack and then the casino afterwards. On Saturday, we had the Rose Show and then the Award Dinner that night when I got the award. Two years ago, I also won the Bronze Honor Medal Award at the Long Island Rose Society which is the highest award at the local level of the American Rose Society. The Gold Honor Award is awarded at the national level of the American Rose Society. These awards are for outstanding service to the American Rose Society.
Since I joined the Long Island Rose Society in 1992, I have volunteered on several committees and have held various offices: Recording Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, President and Board Member, chaired the Rose Show in 2004, 2007 , co-chaired the Rose Show in 2005, 2008, editor of the Long Island Rosarian for 8 years, webmaster of LIRS website for 5 years. I am also a member of the Manhattan Rose Society and am the current treasurer and co-editor of the Manhattan Rose Society's newsletter "Skyscrapers & Roses", volunteered at the New York City Grows Garden Festival for ARS and Manhattan Rose Society for three years. I also belong to Southampton Rose Society and write the monthly "Beginner's Column" of the Dune Rose, Southampton Rose Society's newsletter. At the district level, I am the editor of the Empire State Rosarian for the last 6 years, co-chaired the 2006 New York District Convention, published the award-winning Convention Journal. At the national level, I was a charter member of the ARS Marketing Committee and drafted the committee charter, member of the ARS Membership Committee, member of the ARS Newsletter/Bulletin Competition Committee, recruited members for ARS at the AARP Convention in Las Vegas in 2004, represented ARS at the Garden Writers Symposium in Melville, NY in 2004 and represented ARS at the National Gardening Association conference in Washington, DC. in 2005.
