Meaningless Comments: Case in Point

By
Real Estate Agent with Fathom Realty West Sound WA State 52404

Here is a copy of a post that was recently pubiished by a new member here on ActiveRain. The comments are the original ones, with a few strokes of editing to protect the guilty. Please note that she asks a very legitimate question in her post:

I've been a Realtor for 10 years. I have worked my way to the top of the real estate food chain in my hometown. Now I am out of my element. I've moved to a different state, and need to start my business over. The problem, I don't know ANYONE!

Any advice on re-starting my career? I still own my office back in Jonesville, but now I need to focus on my business in Riverdale. It was easy before because I was in my hometown. I knew everyone, and everyone knew my family. Here, I feel all alone!

I'm starting at a great company that is similar to the one I own in Jonesville. I'm looking forward to all of the possiblities it will bring.

Leave a 'meaningful' response…

Now, please don't get me wrong here. We greatly appreciate those who take time to greet the new members to our ranks, and make them feel welcomed. Such is the friendly nature of our community. However, at least take the time to actually READ their article, and see if there is something specific that they need, or, in this instance, an honest question that went ignored....

Oh Rich - where those REAL responses ??  Like all of them?  There wasn't a single helpful, supportive, helpful reply?  Hmmm thats hard to believe.  But I see what you mean...some of them do sound like cut and past responses that are slapped on every newie's blog......:-(

I"m glad you finally mentioned this. It does get tiresome looking at the stale, robotic responses sometimes. Without interacting with others one won't make the necessary connections to make Active Rain a productive place of business. This all goes back to our idea and others, that comments should be met with a new criteria for points. Not sure if it should be based on characters or self moderated by volunteers but then again perhaps members should get more pro-active and start flagging these kinds of comments in posts.

That is really sad.  She was asking for help and got nothing but staleness!  Shame shame on those responses!

Hi Rich - Wow that is amazing! Was there anyone that even addressed the question? I guess this kind of thing happens everyday. I don't visit the newbies group that often but I bet it runs rampant there.

OMG... that is crazy !  I have noticed that a little bit here and there on my own comments I have received and wondered "where did that come from ? "  ?  Is a little crazy and silly.  Hopefully the quality of comments will improve !

Thanks for calling this out.  I've thought about blogging about it many times.  I feel so bad when others do this when there are legit questions on the blog, but I admit, I don't make a contribution because I feel it would get lost in all the solicitation going on.  I can't believe how many people solicit in their comments to people.  It's SOOOOO RUDE!!!

By the way, if you're looking to buy or sell.... j/k

Rich,

Wow, that really portrays us as being shallow, uncaring and points to her post as being insignificant. This is not the way we want the public to view us. I am ashamed. For them and for the light it shines on all of us. yuk.

Rich - I will agree with you on your post, but there are some posts especially mine where I have photos attached. What would be the best comment be on a photo?

Also, I believe a good long comment is important, but what I have seen sometimes when these types of comments are left that other members will come back with a comment stating we are kissing up.

For the most part though your post is very informant and I think members should think some before leaving a comment.

Welcome to the Rain Rich...I mean I mean...Yes I have seen these common mistakes before and granted sometimes the Title's like announcing your 1st post can derail most readers to jump into welcome mode but its still laziness and disrespectful when you dont read the whole blog.  Thanks for pointing this out more clearly.

Hi Rich, this practice is sad especially with a Newbie seeking support. It all comes down to AR being a reflection of the larger community of life. There are the givers & the takers, and will always be.  At least on AR it's pretty obvious from the getgo. I wonder if we could do a demerit point system for blateant abuse... Why not do a tongue in cheek blog about that?

Rich, this is something even I could be guilty of....I always like to at least welcome new members even though I may not have an "answer" to their posted question. This typically happens when they comment on one of mine, and I go back to reciprocate...........just my two cents. ;-)

Wow Rich, you hit close to home huh?  I've learned so much from AR that it sure would be a waste of everyone's time to leave meaningless comments, like this one for example.

This isn't the first time I've read comments and actually wondered if anyone actually read the piece they were commenting on.  This site can be wonderful, but it can also be a place that documents, for the world to see, whether you are an attentive listener (or not), a professional (or not), an educated Realtor (or not), or detail oriented (or not).

I'm not sure if the isolation at the computer gives writers a feeling of disconnect or if it's the desperate desire for that silly 25 points - but it's alarming either way.

I remember one night when I saw one well established blogger here go around the "top blogs" and literrally post the same paragraph over and over....mission accomplished, points in the bank, go to sleep now

And then there are some posts that get comments that run on for screens.....go figure

That's a first for me. I usually see really helpful comments addressing concerns and answering questions. Good to know this isn't the norm. This would be a whole different place.
