Prestwick Country Club S. Myrtle Beach Golf Course Review

I had never been to Myrtle Beach and I was glad to be there this time of year. When we arrived it was in the upper 70's and the sun was starting to set. The next day was great, sunny and mild. It was about 46 degrees when I was dropped off at the Prestwick Country Club and I checked in at the pro shop and went directly to the driving range to warm up. It has been 5 months since I swung a golf club. I needed to get the cobwebs off and loosen up.

I warmed up and I still felt like I hadn't swung a club in 5 months.  The putting green was in sensational shape. I was able to putt like I had been on the PGA tour. Putts dropped all over the place. I couldn't wait to play my round.

Since I was a single player the course hooked me up with two average Joe's from Spartanburg, NC. Harris and Trent were their names and they had been down there for a bachelor party and just wanted to get a round in. They get to play at least 11 months out of the year. I enjoyed my round with them as they both were nice average Joe's and knew their golf etiquette.

We were greeted at the first tee by the starter who informed us that this was the 5th best kept secret in Myrtle Beach. He said it would be the toughest course we would play on down here. The first hole was a little tricky for just starting a round. It is only 341 yards from the white markers with a course rating of 71.1 and a slope rating of 126. Not an easy course to play the first time. The first hole  was straight out with a large waist bunker on the right side. Easy to hit with a pushed shot off the tee.  I started off with a 3 wood and topped it off the tee and left myself about 215 yards out. I noticed another waste bunker in front of the green and another sand trap to the left of the green as well. I decided to lay up and darn, if it didn't trickle into the trap. Then I proceeded to hit it over the green into another bunker. I ended up with a double bogey 6 not a great way to start but the weather was warming up and it felt great to be on the course.

The one thing about this course is you don't need your driver. You need to place your tee shots in certain places so you can approach the greens with an easier shot. A lot of waste bunkers and sand traps along with elevated greens make this course challenging. Some of the greens have water running along in front or waste bunkers protecting them.

I highly recommend playing this course at least twice. I shot 94 the first day and played a little better the next time with an 87.

The back of the clubhouse looks over the 9th and 18th greens. In between these two holes is a great water hazard that will suck in any errant shot either off the tee or approach shot. The 9th is a par 5 and 18th a par 4.

I can just imagine sipping on a cold beer after a hot round of golf on the the back veranda.

Jay-I dont know what I would do for 5 months if I couldnt play golf.  My dad and his buddies used to travel to Myrtle Beach every year to play golf.  They always spoke very highly of the quality golf courses.  What a great sport to be able to meet two complete strangers and have an enjoyble 4-5 hours with them.  Dribbled the ol' 3 wood off the first tee eh?  Ouch!  What a way to start any round of golf!  Aloha to you as I head out the door to get in a quick twilight 9 at Barbers Point Golf Course.

Dave, the second round I played i played with a father and his 12 yr. old and the 12 yr. old was the best behaved kid I have ever met on the golf course. His etiquette was commendable as his father sure did teach him the right way.

I'm getting ready for bed and you are headed out to play. Our leagues was supposed to start today but we got snowed out. Go Figure...

Have a great round.

George, Back to reality is something I wish wasn't true. Very sick of it. I am really looking forward to a nice spring. They say that won't happen for at least another week.

Brian thanks for stopping by and my game could be really good if we had no trees. A lot of my shots seem to find the lonely tree on any golf course.

The weather was very pleasing and the people were great. You just got to love that that Southern Hospitality.

Sorry about losing you with golf jargon. I am beginning to really hate snow, we got 6 inches and it was heavy. I decided to just shovel enough to get us in our cars and that's it. it will be gone by Sunday I hope.

Happy Easter!

Jay,

Sorry I did not catch this sooner... I will have to upload it to the 2 Average Joes Golf website.  By the way, we still have not agreed on a logo.  As soon as I get something that works, I will get that hat off to you.

just the two... I did not get much response from the contest.  I have asked a couple local graphic artists to come up with something, but I am just not happy with them.   For now, I am using the cartoon logo one just to get something out there.  I hope to have something official before it gets too noticed.

I'm surprised we haven't had much of a response from our fellow Active Rainers. Maybe there aren't that many graphic designers here. I bet Craig Schiller could come up with one. LOL

Yeah, Prestwick used to be one of the premiere courses on the beach.  Still a nice place to play.
