I had never been to Myrtle Beach and I was glad to be there this time of year. When we arrived it was in the upper 70's and the sun was starting to set. The next day was great, sunny and mild. It was about 46 degrees when I was dropped off at the Prestwick Country Club and I checked in at the pro shop and went directly to the driving range to warm up. It has been 5 months since I swung a golf club. I needed to get the cobwebs off and loosen up.
I warmed up and I still felt like I hadn't swung a club in 5 months. The putting green was in sensational shape. I was able to putt like I had been on the PGA tour. Putts dropped all over the place. I couldn't wait to play my round.
Since I was a single player the course hooked me up with two average Joe's from Spartanburg, NC. Harris and Trent were their names and they had been down there for a bachelor party and just wanted to get a round in. They get to play at least 11 months out of the year. I enjoyed my round with them as they both were nice average Joe's and knew their golf etiquette.
We were greeted at the first tee by the starter who informed us that this was the 5th best kept secret in Myrtle Beach. He said it would be the toughest course we would play on down here. The first hole was a little tricky for just starting a round. It is only 341 yards from the white markers with a course rating of 71.1 and a slope rating of 126. Not an easy course to play the first time. The first hole was straight out with a large waist bunker on the right side. Easy to hit with a pushed shot off the tee. I started off with a 3 wood and topped it off the tee and left myself about 215 yards out. I noticed another waste bunker in front of the green and another sand trap to the left of the green as well. I decided to lay up and darn, if it didn't trickle into the trap. Then I proceeded to hit it over the green into another bunker. I ended up with a double bogey 6 not a great way to start but the weather was warming up and it felt great to be on the course.
The one thing about this course is you don't need your driver. You need to place your tee shots in certain places so you can approach the greens with an easier shot. A lot of waste bunkers and sand traps along with elevated greens make this course challenging. Some of the greens have water running along in front or waste bunkers protecting them.
I highly recommend playing this course at least twice. I shot 94 the first day and played a little better the next time with an 87.
The back of the clubhouse looks over the 9th and 18th greens. In between these two holes is a great water hazard that will suck in any errant shot either off the tee or approach shot. The 9th is a par 5 and 18th a par 4.
I can just imagine sipping on a cold beer after a hot round of golf on the the back veranda.
