How did you pick your coach?

We are looking at selecting a new coach for our team and would love some input from others out there that have had good success...

What do I want?

  • To be coached like a professional... NOT be ordered around or expected to "do as I'm told without question"
  • Think outside the box
  • unique marketing
  • help build the team

Don't want...

  • Crazy expensive...
  • Arrogant "talk down" coaching...

What I am really looking for is a member of the team...Someone to help out and be a mentor...

OKAY, OKAY... Not THAT Helpful...

I have looked into several coaching programs in the past

  • Craig Proctor
  • Keller Williams
  • Harris RE university
  • I am looking at Todd Bates right now...

Share what you can... I prefer ACTUAL experience over second hand but I'll take what I can get...

I've been with Todd Bates online stuff and honestly, I'm not all that impressed.  Don't know about his one on one coaching.

My former office, a KW office, had a coach on staff at the end, but he just didn't understand coaching past a certain level.  I'm not sure about their MAPS program other than our team leader at KW said is was pretty mega expensive.

Maybe you might try Katerina Gasset since she understands the blog medium that we have chosen.

Ron,

I got some great coaching from Mary McKnight on the blogging thing... don't know it all but we do get results.  Looking to focus on other areas as well.  Thanks,

Brett,

Thanks for the tip but I checked out the site and I am just really looking for a coach that is WAY more advanced in terms of technology and on the cutting edge.  That site is on an alamode.com template site and I want someone more advanced.

Thanks for the tips though...

You asked how we picked our coach. I found that most coaches give a free session or a reduced price seminar entry or tons of downloadables on the web...or something of value to enable one to select the one that most nearly matches individual needs. Based on your criteria I don't think my coach is the right one for you...but happy hunting!

Hi Ron,
I just spent 1.5 hours with Linda McLean (http://www.mcleaninternational.com/).  She helped Craig Proctor get started in the business and was his partner for 7 years.  My assistant TL is a friend and collegue of Linda and asked her to spend some time with our office in discussing the top 5 zones to pay attention to when you want to grow in your business.  She was very knowledge and hands-on....her coaching is hands-on and customized for each client's needs.  Sounds like you have some very specific wants so her customized style may fit your needs.

Dora,

Thanks for the tip... I will check them out.  Did you talk with anyone that had actually use her?

Mark,

I also was formerly with KW. As a TL I was required to have a coach. Let me say, it's all in the individual coach. I had a tech coach, Chris Buckelew, who was fabulous. My MAPS coach, Gary Biancini, was also fabulous. They both were very much business but no looking down or belittling. Make sure you get a chance to interview your coach before you lay your money down. Some of the other TL's I know had terrible coaches.

I think you need to find an individual coach that is outstanding, it is not a company.  You have to find someone that messes well with you.  By the way love the bottom picture.  That was great.

Larry,

Good tip on the interview... I made that mistake early in my career and have "dodged a bullet" on coaches by interviewing them...

Carol,

Thought that photo was too funny... Again, I agree... want to talk with the coach in person first...

Thanks

Jeepers!  I don't know how I missed this post!  After many years of trying different programs, I was fortunate to be invited by a Women's Realtor Group, to listen to Brian Buffini.  My life changed, that day.  I work smarter, have more time for my family, for myself, and my black lab. I really do like my clients.  It is an amazing process.  I was a RE/MAX agent for 13 years.  Lucky for you, you can listen to him on your RSN network and I know that Dave Liniger has him at the RE/MAX Conventions.  After all, he was a very successful RE/MAX agent.  Be sure to check out his systems and what he offers to you.  They are proven systems. We have a Buffini famly blog here on the rain.  Stop by and say hello:)  Meet some of our members!

It's a Good Life!

Fran,

Thanks for the tip and I will have to make a point of checking his stuff out on reamax.net but I really want to work with someone directly rather than a "coach" that works for them...

Thanks again for the tip.

Hey Mark, I have tried Craig Proctor and he was really good or his associates were anyway, I have tried Todd and he had an excellent FSBO program that I still use today. Tried Mike Ferry and he was aggressive, obnoxious and a total but, at the time I think I needed that because he taught me focus of which I still use today. I really don't get into the coaching thing since I left RE/Max. I coach my own people now. My last years at Re/max I really got into the Re/Max network and learned a lot form that. I was looking into Brian Buffini but I don't know. They say you get what you pay for but I tell you I have found the cost to be $1000 a month no matter who you chose. So I am going back to basics and taking a little from them all and doing my own. I probably didn't help any but you sure got me to thinking. Good luck.

Charles,

I agree with much of what you say... I will tell you that Todd is much less then most of the others I looked into and the "get what you pay for" thing did come to mind but from what I can tell from very early on I really think we are going to like working with him.

The big thing I see with him is that he will CUSTOMIZE the coaching to me/our team... NOT just ram down your throat the canned package / answers to everything... that they teach everyone else.

Still yet to be seen but am hopeful!

Thanks,

Be a mentor. Be a coach.  Make a difference and it will be returned to you.

Tim,

Actually going well.  To be honest I need to take advantage of what he offers more than I do... He will not force you to use him... you have to take that step... he is there as much or as little as you want... I like that but it can have a down side that someone is not there it kick you in the a$$ sometimes...

Has some great marketing tools and programs and like his style a lot...

If you are interested I can put you in touch with him to talk things over first...

Mark,

Look into John Alexandrov, http://yourcalltosuccess.com/cmd.php?af=806969 .  Check out his different coaching prigrams and what he offers.  We have coached with him twice, after Mike Ferry, after Harris Real Estate University, after Buffini ...we like himand his systems the best.
