I have had cats all my life, usually rescuing them from animal shelters and keeping them until they died of old age or they were in so much pain and couldn't move that it was heartbreaking to try to keep them alive, resulting in a fond, but difficult, farewell at the vet's office. My most recent adoption, Zoey, has a birthday coming up on September 20 since we adopted her from the El Cajon Animal Shelter on September 20, 2007.
Recently, Nebraska passed a "safe-haven" law that allows parents to abandon their children to the care of the State. The Associated Press reported this past Tuesday that the first two boys were abandoned to hospitals under the law.
One was a 15-year-old boy turned in to Lincoln's BryanLGH Medical Center West by his 44-year-old aunt, his legal guardian. She said the boy's behavioral problems made it impossible for her to take care of him anymore.
The other was an 11-year-old boy left at Omaha's Immanuel Medical Center. He was left by his mother who said that she "believed she could no longer care for him." Who knows what that means? She lost her job? She has a new boyfriend who takes all her time?
I don't have children, and I always find it difficult to say goodbye to my cats, but I just can't imagine giving up on a child. Perhaps some old fashioned LOVE AND DISCIPLINE might be in order rather than ignoring the child or spoiling the child.
Well, at least these two young boys might have a better chance than they would have by staying with parents who don't love them or can't take care of them for whatever reason.
