I have been a member of Active Rain for a long time.  Unfortunately, I havent utilized it to its fullest potential.  This morning, I was looking around at some blogs that I had been missing and quickly realized something.  What is that something? Active Rain is not just about real estate.  It has become more.  Over time, many have bonded with other members.  Some make special trips to meet one another. There is a real sense of community here.  You can see members sharing the highs and low of life.  So, I would like to share with you my newest high....

I have raised my girls to be very understanding of where people are in theirs lives.  It doesnt matter if they live in a million dollar home or under the bridge at Interstate 75.  It doesnt matter if they are highly educated or never learned to read or write.  People deserve respect.

They also have learned that you reach out and help when you can.  Often doing this, your helping people that might even need the same help you do, but it isnt about you.  Giving reaps many rewards.  Give unselfishly and you will be rewarded again and again.  So, to my point.

I would like to introduce you to Nathan (soon to be Colby Jacob).  Nathan came into our lives as a very big surprise last Saturday morning.  My daughter Megan, who is 19 and in the Army has taken custody of Nathan and made me an instant Grandma.  I had always hoped to be atleast 40 before this happened.  Technically, I guess I will be.  The permanent custody hearing is set for September 29th, my 40th birthday.

About 7 months ago, Megan mentioned to me that a friend from high school was pregnant and did not want the baby.  Megan had asked my opinion about her taking custody. I said, "Absolutely not!"  Megan was 19, she had a lot of living to do and some growing up before she needed the responsibility of a baby.

A conversation between Megan and I went like this on Saturday:

Megan: What are you guys doing?

Me: We are headed to Markus's soccer game.  What are you doing?

Megan:  I am at the Mt. Zion exit.

Me: What are you doing in town?

Megan: I had a couple of things to take care of.

Me: Good, while your here, swing by and pick up Moe (the dog that she is suppose to be taking back to KY with her).

Megan: I cant, I dont have room for him with the baby and things.

Me: What baby?

To say the least, I was shocked.

Come to find out, the baby hadnt been taken very good care of.  His siblings had been also given away.  Nathan is a little behind developmentally, but nothing that a little time spent working with him wont fix.  He had a little bruising on his spine, and he was not being properly fed.  Today is his first check up!

This all unfolded so quickly, I didnt have time to really think things through. Megan brought Nathan to see us at the soccer game.  I instantly fell in love with him.  I grilled Megan with some "Motherly" questions.  She had all the legal paperwork drawn up by military attorneys.  She had already taken care of base housing, so the have their own place.  Her and her boyfriend had bought clothes, toys and other necessities.  Childcare was arranged.  She had done all of this and given up her post teenage years unselfishly for this little boy who just wanted to be loved and cared for.

Megan was actually very scared to tell us.  She wasnt sure how we would react.  Of course, there is nothing we could at this point, but accept it and make the best of the situation.  So I am a beaming grandma and Chris is a closet Grandpa...lol  I know deep down he is excited, but he isnt going to show it yet.  Septemember 29th is a big day for us.  The hearing will determine if he is with us for the long haul.

I am very proud of Megan for the preparation she did in order to make this all happen. I am proud of her for unselfishly giving her heart to this little boy.  Megan and I have butted heads many times and even recently, but we do agree on one thing....He is simply wonderful.

Some of the biggest gifts come in little packages.

Brande- That is a very heart warming blog. He is so cute and I am very proud of Megan for her thoughtful and loving decision she has made. No child should be in that situation. Oh btw.. Congratulations grandma! <leaves>

Grandma! WOW!

She obviously put a lot of mature thought and preparation into this. I'm sure she will be a great mom, but then again she learned from one of the best. Does legal custody mean adoption?

Brande, there is one thing that I have learned i life that sticke with me. Help others get what they want and you shall have what you want.

Megan gave up what she wanted unselfishly so that this baby could have what he wants; a good life with a great mother. And to boot he gets a pretty good brandma to go with it.

Marey -  Well, you have known Megan for a long time.  You also know she was a pistol...lol  Funny how they grow up.  We need to come up with something more hip than "grandma".  I am just sure I can deal with that yet....lol

Rich - She did do a lot of preparation.  Although, I am not real sure if she is prepared for everything that goes with having a baby. I am sure that I will be getting a few calls.  This is legal custody.  Adoption is possible down the road.  We just need to take everything one step at a time.  With them being in Kentucky, it makes the process a little complicated.

Danny - Megan will be a GREAT mom.  She has always been very protective of little ones.  Nathan could not be more blessed than to have her.  I am going to be a "hip" grandma....lol

Brande, what an amazing daughter that you have. Good luck to her and her new son- it sounds like he needs a new Mummy to love him.

That's amazing, Brande!  Best of luck on Sept 29!  This little guy deserves a good family.

Brande you are right I have known her for a long time and she was a pistol!  But one thing she also "IS" is a good person, she was great with the boys and they love her to death. Because of that, I know she will be a great mother to Nathan. How about the "Other Mother" or just gma! lol

Oh wow, we really have to get together and celebrate GRANDMA!  My prayer for your Megan is that she is so blessed by this addition to her life that she will never even think of the things she "misses".  He looks just precious.  The extra kids David and I have picked up :) along the way have brought us as many blessings as our biological kids and the world definitely needs more people like her.

Brande, wow, what a beautiful baby. I'm sure you were a bit shocked, news like that would catch anyone by surprise. How selfless of Megan, I'm sure this baby was nagging on her heart. If she didn't step in I'm sure this little guy would have had a dismal future. I'll be praying for you all and will keep the 29th in mind. Big changes Grandma.

Congratulations Grandma. You should be very proud. You raised up a very responsible and mature woman who is going to be a great mother just like you was to her. Have a great weekend.

Tears in my eyes.  This is the best story I have heard in a long time.  Give grandpa time he will come out of the closet.  Your daughter and boyfriend are wonderful people with lots of love to give which this baby needs. I went through a similar situation with my grand child however the mother has come around and I am glad to say they are together now. My grand child and I have a bond that I don't think will ever be broken. We were there when she needed us and now she is there when I need her.  She is only two but on an extremely bad days she makes me smile.  Best of wishes to you and your family.  It is going to be great. Update as often as you can I would be very interested. Christmas, First Birthday, whatever. Your daughter seems to be very mature, able and wanting to be a care taker no wonder why you are so proud.  I don't know them and I am proud (is that ok?).

Michelle -  We REALLY do need to met!!  He was cooing on the phone this morning.  A smile comes across my face just at the thought of it.  Ok, so I completely in the "grandma" mode.  I dare anyone to mess with him :-)

Brande - Having a grandchild is a high you will never come down from!  Meghan at the tender age of 19 is taking on a responsibility that is going to fulfill her life in so many ways not to mention yours Grandma and closet Grandpa.

My granddaughter who is now 6 came in our lives unexpectedly and my husband was was a closet Grandpa too at first but there are no words to describe the love and joy she has brought into our lives.  Her mom who was also 19 at the time of her birth has shown such maturity, strength and unselfishness in putting her child's needs above anything else and has always had from the beginning our continued love and support.

You should be so proud to know that you have raised a daughter with values to think of others before herself and who I know is going to be the best MOM in the world to Colby Jacob!  And he'll have the best GRANDMA and GRANDPA too!

Best of luck on September 29th!

You are going to have fun.  I think that my wife's parents and mine enjoy our kids more than we do... or more than they ever enjoyed us when we were little.

We will probably think about adopting a child when our get to be a little older.

And that is a lucky little boy.  May I recommend the Parkview High School cluster up here in Lilburn...

Talk about being an "instant" grandmother!  The baby is a darling and I applaud your daughter for her ability to love and nuture a little one at her age.

Brande I know your very proud as you should be. Your daughter has done a really unselfish act and will be rewarded for it even more than she is now and I am sure about that. LOL with the new addition to your family.

Ohhhhh.....he is just precious! How wonderful you are an "instant" grandma. I once had a client tell me when I became a new grandma that it is really "instant love". Your daughter is wonderful to take on such a responsiblity, she will be rewarded thousands of times over.
