I'm throwing out a question to Active Rain dog people. Gracie Good Girl

Does anyone have any idea what kind of dog my Gracie might be?

We got her from a rescue group who told us she was saved from a puppy mill in Miami where she was a breeder. It was obvious when we brought her home that she had just had a litter. Poor little mama. They said she was a Shi Tzu, and while she may have *some* Shi Tzu in her ..... I dunno....

She weighs about 12 pounds and she is very long and has short stubby legs. I had one vet tell me she thought she was some type of Terrier. And the short legs may suggest that. But her length is almost Daushund like.

I have had folks tell me:

  • Lhasa Apso
  • Maltese
  • Shi Tzu
  • Terrier
  • Tibetan Terrier

Of course she is most likely a mix. Maybe of all of the above! LOL

I personally am thinking Havanese. I have found pictures of this breed that look very similar to Gracie.

Gracie Good GirlNo, it certainly doesn't matter because whatever she is.... she sure is cute! And we love her.

It's just that every time I take her for a walk, someone asks me what breed she is. I decided that I am going to pick one and make it official.

So Active Rain ... what say you? What breed should Gracie be?

I have a Shitzue and my inlaws have a Sharma which is a Shitzue and Maltese. Their dog looks just like your, but is black and white, and has a little longer hair cut. I say maltese.

I also think she may be Havanese but she may be a mix of some of the above mentioned breeds.  Looks more Havanese.

She has to have Maltese in her. The precious face is unmistakable. The tail is a Maltese as well.

I have only seen a Havanese once, and thought it was adorable!  I also think it had more hair, especially covering the eyes than yours.  She looks like a Shi Tzu to me (old boyfriend had one of those).  Have you looked at pictures online of all these other breeds?

Wow, Gracie looks like one cute puppy. As for what breed, HHHmmmm ..... I would say it is safe to rule out Great Dane or Greyhound......hhhmm, not sure. She does look kinda like our Mozart who is Maltese,

Whatever Gracie is, it really doesn't matter. All that matters is that she has a good home now.

Thanks everyone for the comments and opinions! Looks llike Maltese is a front runner. Yeah ... she is a cutie. And so very happy and grateful. Rescue babies usually are! Here is another picture of her the night we brought her home. (after a bath!) It's a bad picture, but you can see how scared and sad she was.

Sean ... your Mozart is ADORABLE!! Thanks for sharing. I would love to see more dog pics from everyone!

I used to be a master groomer in my past life.  Your cutie definitely looks Maltese in the face and maybe Laso Aspo body.  She sure reminds me of my Babydoll. She was also a rescue dog. I sure do miss her.pea

Sharon, I can't help you out on the breed, but Gracie is one cute dog!!  It is great that you rescued her and gave her a good home!

Hi Sharon,

Since her nose isn't flat like a shitzu or boxy like a lhasa, I think you can rule those two out. Her face and coat look a lot like a maltese, especially the eyes.

As far as the length of her body, sleeze ball breeders deliberately look for females with long bodies because they usually have more puppies. My lhasa Charlie, who probably was a puppy mill puppy, has a longer than average body too.

My vote is mostly maltese. Whatever she is, she's adorable and lucky to have found you.

Sharon ----   cute dog but man - sure needs to go to the doggie dentist  :-)

6:24am • #29

Lewis ...LOL ! She DID go to the dentist. That's why half her teeth were pulled and now she has a snaggle tooth. Which makes her look even cuter. Puppy mill dogs always have bed teeth .;-( Is this your Pug?

Robert .....I WISH I could teach my dogs to go out and get me some money!! LOL But they are too chort. They'll never reach. And the other picture of "Robert" ... he looks like he just did something baaaaddddd ... did you do something bad Robert???? ;-)

Jesse! ...What a dog picture! Another beautiful photo from you. It looks like a calander shot. She is beautiful. Is she long haired Doxie?

Susan ... thank you so much for the advice! You sound like you know what you are talking about! Do you have "dog" experience?

Roberta ... thank you so much! Rescue dogs make the BEST family members don't they?!

If I did not respond to anyone here ... I went to your blogs and left comments. That's what I have been doing lately instead of responding here, I am going to the commentors blog and READING it! I have picked up many new subscriptions and met some awesome people this way. I'm likin it!

Oh!  My!  God!  She is just the cutest!  One of my colleagues had a DNA test done on a dog she adopted from the pound to determine the breed.  And it was a totally surprising mix - not that it made a difference!  They were, like you, really curious because the dog was so quirky cute!

I dunno....the body shape and the teeth sure look like Lhasa to me. My mom used to have one. But I agree with others who say your bundle of joy could be a mix of all the ones you mentioned.Abby

BTW...Robert, beagle is sooooo cute!!! Here's my old girl. At 13 yrs old, she's definately a senior citizen.

Gracie is precious and I know you must love her to pieces no matter what she is.  I have always been a cat person but am a proud grandmother of a Westie and a Yorkie that are winning me over to the doggies!  I am a sucker for all little creatures.....they are so adorable!  I think Gracie has angle wings and a little halo!  Love her!

What an adorable dog.  Gracie is so cute!  You can go and have a DNA test done to determine breeds nowadays.

I have entirely too many dogs (actually, they have me!!).

Obviously, none of mine are of similar breeds and I really have no input on the breed to speak of...mine were just jealous when they saw me looking at all the other pretty puppies and I had to make it look like I was doing this for them!

I tell ya, they're plotting on me!

9:16pm • #46

Kevin ... you are *THE DOG MAN* LOl ... good for you. They are beautiful. I love the puupy pic. Sharpeis are so expressive. I just had a very experienced groomer promise me that Gracie is Maltese and ShiTzu. She said she is a Shemalt. I dunno about that name ..... doesn't have a good ring to it...

I have a friend that has a Maltese and your Gracie sure does favor her alot.

Just one of my 4 furbabies!!
