I got a call recently from one of our office managers.  It seems one of her agents took a call from a consumer warning us about one of our listings on Craig's List.  It seems when the consumer contacted the "owner" she got a reply indicating that the owner was out of state; however, if the consumer sent a $500 key deposit a key to the property would be sent overnight to the caller and the $500 returned when they sent the key back.

Needless to say, we do not put our listings on Craig's List and this was a total scam.

Fortunately, it wasnt a very good scam and the consumer saw through it right away.  We contacted Craig's List and had the ad removed.  They are cooperating, but it is extremely difficult to track all of our 6000+ listings for any that might be appropriated for a scam like this.

Whether or not you put your listings on Craig's List (or a site like it) it might be worth a look to see if any of your listings appear there anyway!

This is inevitable...I would continue to list on craigslist. Too much traffic to pull the listings off craigslist. The younger generation of buyers uses craigslist. The same type of thing is plausible on Realtor.com or any listing site for that matter.

And away we go...  That was a lame scam attempt,  but the big-time scammers will get super savvy super quick on craigslist.  Thanks for the heads-up.

Thank you for the reminder.  My manager says it is the wild west on Craig's List.  There is a reason for guidelines.

Don't send money to ftnuyjimeo@hotmail.com

Hello ,
Thank you again for your reply . If you are ready to proceed with this transaction I must tell you how this service work and what we need to do.
You have to deposit to RENT Service the first month of rent-$1100 and a security deposit of $1100, so they can proceed with the shipping of the keys and the contract. Like I said, I will pay for 2 days delivery so you'll receive the Keys and the contract signed by me right away. I will explain you step by step how this service work.
1 - To start this transaction i need to know your full shipping information (full name and shipping address)
2 - I'll go to a RENT Office and leave the Keys and the contract on your name as the intended receiver.
3 - RENT will check the envelope to see if everything is OK with it and also the legal documents that come along with the Keys.
4 - After they will check the documents , RENT will send you a delivery notification to let you know that they have the Keys and the documents in their custody.
5 - At this point you'll have to go to a Western Union Office and make a money deposit on the RENT agent name for the amount we agreed (the total amount you shall deposit is for the first month of rent and for the security deposit).
6 - After you'll make the deposit you'll have to send the info about the money deposit to RENT .
7 - RENT will verify the deposit information's and if everything is in order they will deliver the Keys and the contract to you.
8 - After you receive the keys and the contract, you must check the apt, decide if you keep the apt or not. If all is in order you'll instruct RENT to release the money to me. If you don`t like the apt they will return your money, and they will ship back to me the keys (you'll have 2 days to decide if you keep the apt or not).
I will pay RENT Service for the shipping and you'll pay Western Union for the Money Transfer fee.
So if you have $2,200 cash (the rent for 1 month-$1100 and the security deposit-$1100) and if you're ready for this transaction tell me your full name and your shipping address and I'll start the official procedure, and RENT will notify you about this matter. You'll also receive important guidelines plus instructions from them (please go through them exactly)
So:
1. As soon as I get your info I will ship the keys and the contract.
2. RENT will check the contract and the keys and they will notify you about this matter(they will send you all the instructions in order to complete the deal in a safe way for both)
3. You must send the money in the next 24 hours to the RENT agent.
4. After you'll confirm the payment they will start delivery at your address (the shipping will not take more then 2 days).
5. After you'll receive the keys, you'll have 2 days to decide if you keep the apt or not.
So if you're a serious person tell me your info and I'll start the process.
PS: When I start the process I must pay RENT fees and if you can't send the money in the next 24 hours, they will cancel the shipping and I will lose the money paid for the transaction.

Best Regards

Thanks for your response. My name is Cindy Robert and I wish to inform you that the apartment 85 Livingston Street, Brooklyn NY 11201 (Interior: 1,515 sq. ft. (approx.), Neighborhood: Brooklyn Heights) is still available and belongs to my husband and I. We apologize for the slight delay in responding to your enquiry. We just received some news from our representative (John Lamont Caldwell Tel: 773 467 7459) who is presently in Chicago had a little accident so we are handling the leasing ourselves.

Since we cleared the apartment for renovation on August, we have not been in New York due to business. Myself and my husband relocated to England, so we will be given out the apartment for a long duration at $800 month rate (Utilities included). I live in SF and responded to an ad on craigslist that looked too good to be true.  Didn't think it was a scam at first so I sent a reply.  I was actually just trying to find this Melissa Garone on Facebook or see if there was anything about her. That's when I found this website and several other that said "Scam".  Thank you all for posting.

The Initial email and respones to my email are exactly what you have listed in this blog.  Same exact thing.  Thanks again and please keep the warnings coming.  It's ridiculous that people think and actually do get away with scams like this.

We got the same email reply for an apartment in Vancouver BC at 1790 Bayshore Drive, Vancouver Canada that was listed on Craigslist. This person's name was Donna HICKS using the email address hscaur00il@hotmail.com.  We found it was a scam by googling the email, which lead us to Melissa GARONE and this site.  Unbelievable!

When I first posted this back in September, I had no idea how widespread this scam is!  Im glad people are finding this (and other warnings) and avoiding being ripped off.  We at CBRB are in contact with the people at Craig's List every time we hear about one asking them to remove the listing.  They do take it down, but the scammers change a word or two and repost - sometimes within a day!  Be careful, people!

Hi Mimi - I got the same exact one from a Donna Hicks. It sounded so fishy to me so I googled the word "scam" and the apt adress. So glad I found this site.

Don't every pay anyone w/o seeing the place or the owner first. Make sure you get a copy of the contract and ready thoroughly. Also be aware of landlords who could be going through foreclosure. Sometimes they don't tell you that when you sign a lease contract.

This Kimberly Dobson has an awful lot of similar properties, doesn't she.  TOTAL SCAM!  There hasn't been an apartment for rent in Boston for under 3 grand in YEARS.  Here is her email that she is using with me vremnodno@hotmail.com.  I'm sure there are plenty of others.  Don't fall for it.  craigslist is a great resource, but one has to use her head...if its obvioulsy too good to be true, it probably is.  If someone wants money and personal info before you even see an apartment, run.

vremnodno@hotmail.com Also seems like a scam to me - with this rent.com nonsense. Horrible people out there.

Seems to me like they all have the same pattern; it's like the e-mail has a sort of format to it, you know? I encountered a similar scam listing for a too-good-to-be-true unit in Back Bay (Boston, MA), but saw through it quickly, just because of the illogical circumstances:

1. listed was a 1200-square foot apartment in Back Bay with two huge bedrooms, very nice bathrooms, great kitchen, two deed parking lots - all for $1200, inclusive of utilities. RIDICULOUS. I'm not even from America and I know that sort of nonsense does not exist. Initially I thought the pictures shown were just from a more expensive unit in the same building (and figured that maybe the $1200 unit was a cheaper, smaller, uglier apartment) but when the "owner" emailed me back with more pictures depicting that very beautiful apartment, there was immediate reason to suspect something wasn't right.

2. method of payment -> pay $2,400 (first and last) to a NAR agent in UK. I thought it was odd that the payment should go to UK instead of an agent in America, even though the owner did claim to have moved to England recently. I did a quick Google and found a scam warning on NAR's website. Yay NAR.

3. rental period: 1 month to 6 years? HUH??? Nonsensical.

4. "it is hard to find a tenant" - ludicrous claim. At $1,200 such an apartment should have been snatched up ages ago.

5. Apart from the initial lengthy email, every single other reply I got whenever I asked questions came in the form of a single sentence, or just several words. Not very convincing for someone who initially seemed quite eager to rent out his/her unit.

6. Western Union. *shakes head* Regardless of what the person's name is (it changes, I reckon; I got a Dorothy Parker, ha!), if you are a moderately seasoned internet buyer (whether of eBay junk or more expensive stuff like... well, property), you should see through this quite quickly. The girl I was planning to rent this apartment with wasn't so bright and nearly bought into it, but I'm glad I stopped her from sending anything over. Everyone really SHOULD read the list of warnings and FAQs on Craigslist.

The monthly rent is not negotiable, if you can pay the 3 months in advance it will be considered as 4 month's rent. The rent of the condo for 1 month is $900 including all utilities. (water, electricity, Internet, cable, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage) and I want to receive the money monthly in my Bank Account. The rent is for the whole apartment NOT just a shared room. This is not a sublease, etc. You can move in the condo in the same day when you receive the keys. I am looking for someone serious and responsible, please tell tell me about yourself, about the people who will be living in the  apartment and a little about your credit.
Let me know if you have received the photos of the apartment bellow.

then she followed our reply with:

Hello again,
First of all ... Thank you very much for your detailed reply with all the requested information.   I need to tell you that your e-mail impressed me , and I would be more than happy to rent my apartment to you.   If we decide to proceed with this transaction, I will have to contact Realtor.com and provide them all the necessary information, so they can start the process right away.   I will need your Full NAME and Address for that. You will receive a notification from Realtor.com shortly after that, together with all the instructions to follow and the   invoice as well.
Regarding the Payment, you will be instructed to deposit the amount to a Realtor.com Agent from United Kingdom. They will hold and insure your money    until you check the apartment and decide if you want take it or not. That is how their buyer protection policy works. As far as my concerns,    I will be glad to know that Realtor.com has the possession of the money during the delivery period. That is my insurance.  Your money will be secured, I will not have access to the funds. You will send the deposit and confirm the details to Realtor.com. They will hold the details unavailable to me,   so I cannot collect the amount deposited. When the transfer has been verified I will only receive a notice that the deposit was confirmed. They keys and documents will be  mailed to you the same day the deposit is verified. The transfer details will be released to me only after you have inspected the apartment and only after you have confirmed   you are satisfied with it and you want to rent it. If you do not want to rent the apartment the funds will be returned to you.  As soon as the funds have been deposited into their account, they will immediately start the shipping process of the keys.  The keys and rental contract will be delivered at your address in no more than 3 working days. You will be given a ten days inspection period from the   day you receive the keys and contract at home. If you decide to hold the apartment, then you will have to authorise Realtor.com to release the funds to me,   and the transaction will be completed.
If you will not be satisfied with the apartment, you will be able to send the keys and contract back through the   same service and ask Realtor.com to return the funds to you. The amount will be refunded in max 24hours after your request ( but I am sure that you won't have to do that )  Though I am sure you will love the apartment, it is good to know that you do have this second option available. If you wish to proceed with renting the apartment,   please provide me your full NAME and Address, Phone + FAX Number so I can initiate the deal through Realtor.com right away.
I look forward to hearing back from you.  Please do not forget about the requested DATA in your reply, if you want to proceed further.

Thank you for your time and nice cooperation.

Great, the list of scammers keeps growing.  Well, at least we can keep spreading the word to be on the lookout.  Stuff like this never ceases to amaze me.  It seems it would be less work to get a real job and honestly earn money than to devise and execute a scam like this.

Thanks for the update!
