I am in a state of denial; I just don't want to admit to myself that the summer is winding down and the cold weather is just around the corner.  I suppose like many consumers in the area the cost of heating oil is never too far away from my thoughts. Yes, we are hoping for a really, really mild winter but being realistic I know it probably won't be the case.   Fall Scene at Olana

Recently, I read a post by my friend Monika McGillcuddy about fall in New Hampshire and I was forced once again to face the fact that the fall is upon us.  The truth is, I really love the fall, all those vibrant colors really get my attention.  When I was growing up on a Caribbean island I never saw such dramatic changes in the colors of the leaves. So, when as a child I saw the fall colors in a book I thought the photo was doctored up.  So, I can't tell you how thrilled I was the first time I experienced a fall in the Northeast and I have never lost that thrill.

The Hudson Valley with it's vast variety of trees does put on a spectaular show of colors and as Monika pointed out this year was rather wet so we are likely to have a great year.  The I Love New York Site does provide great information on the various leaves and you can call to get updates on the various stages of the coloring. For those who might still not be too clear as to why the leaves change colors here is a simple scientific explanation.

People enjoy the fall foliage in various ways.

It is best to make a weekend of it and also tour some of the many wonderful historic sites around.  Since many do enjoy this activity it is also important to book a hotel room or B&B early or you might find yourself without a room.

After putting this together I just can't wait to get my camera out. I am hoping I can take a cruise on the Hudson River. That should be awesome.

Tonight for the first time, it feels a little crisp outside.  But the trees are still green.  Love your photos!

I loved it - and if you get to take that cruise - you have to do a show - we don't get many color changes - darn evergreens do just what their name says - ever green

Jennifer- Your post is delightful on two counts. I am impresssed with your fall colors that are not at all yet apparent in my city although it is in the feel of the air and I am glad it is. Secondly, I am motivated by your video that I thoroughly enjoyed. It works!

Jennifer - Like you, I am having a hard time believing it's fall. I am going to Hilton Head for a long weekend next week just for one more warm weather fix before I reluctantly settle for cold. I'll at least have the pretty fall colors in the Hudson Valley to look forward to when I get back.

Thanks for the warning. The leaf peepers will be here before we know it Jennifer.  It is a beautiful time of year up here in the Hudson Valley.  Have a great weekend.

Tracy - It hasn't happened yet.  I need to add 2007 to my show, those are some scenes from last year.

Thesa - I know what you mean. On a trip to Washington state I found myself missing the tree variety we have in the Hudson Valley.  The change in season is so dramatic here.

Liz - I know just what you mean.  Sadly at the end it will be time to rake up those beautiful leaves, a task I am not looking forward to.

Pat the same here, it is getting cooler at night which is necessary for the leaves to change.

Eloise - These are shots from last year, I was trying to get people motivated for the season.

Carol - Enjoy that weekend and when you get back the colors will be waiting, and raking comes next....Lol

Paddy - The Leaf Peepers are so vital to the economy of the Valley.  I sure hope people won't cut back on these tours because of the present financial crisis.

Jennifer, we are barely into fall. The mornings are cool the afternoons hot and my AC of off for good. I love fall one of my favorite times of the year, but I don't like what comes after it.

HI JENNIFER!

It looks beautiful there.  Here, the trees & grass are still green.  We're still watering and mowing lawns.  Fall hasn't really begun to set in.   The fall is my favorite time of year.  I love warm colors, they're so me!  Thanks for sharing & it gets me more ready for the season I love most!

Jennifer ~ I always love traveling by car in the fall, coming over a hill and being able to see the view of tree leaves changing color - it is absolutely breathtaking.  I usually get a little down when I realize summer is over, but you can't help loving the changing colors.

Jennifer:there is something magical about NY and New England fall. The most magical moment may be the Indian summer. I recall well when I lived in MA and NY and the fall was just around the corner. The summer never seem to be long enough but you are entering one of the most beautiful season in our country. Now its all upside down in my neck of the woods. Here the best month may be November. It is quite breathtaking at that time of year to drive along the Hudson Valley and stay at a Inn or B&B.The air is fresh and the sun light plays peek a boo between the red, orange and crimson leaves. Its a feast for the eye.One can see why so many artists are drawn towards this area of the Hudson valley.I recall Rhinebeck very well.Great place to call home or visit. Thanks you for sharing these pictures. They tell the whole story. I never minded racking all these leaves.Great excercice!

Jennifer, I LOVE the fall colors but that is one thing we really don't get to see much living in Houston.  Our leaves stay on until about December and then just turn brown and fall.  I was hoping maybe there would be some fall colors here in Queens but the trees are all still fairly green.  Next year we have a trip scheduled to Rhode Island the end of September so maybe we will get to see some color then.

Jennifer, BEAUTIFUL real estate show. I LOVE your area....still have photos to share from last year when we did take a cruise from New Jersey to Quebec and back. Before long, fall will definitely be here. I can feel it in the air. ;-)

I am originally from the Warwick and was just wondering where Rhinebeck was?? I've heard of it but have never been there. The photos you put on here are great! That's the reason I love visiting my family. It is hard sometimes to believe that its NY....

Monika - The colors really get to you,  then you just can't help exploring.

Missy - Were you thinking of the snow or fallen leaves?  I usually have far too many leaves to rake up.

Paddy - I sure hope we get lots of visitors to the region.

Yvette the pictures are from last year.  I am also still mowing although it has gotten cooler.

Kathy- I know just what you mean.  It can be so breathtaking.

Leander - I really look forward to the fall.

George - I agree with you.

Lloyd - I will try to share more pictures as the season progress.

Marchel - You will have a better chance of seeing colors late September in RI

Teri - You must have gotten some really great shots.

Stacey - Rhinebeck is north of Poughkeepsie and south of Albany.
