For years, I have advocated my clients use of professional movers when it comes time to move into the new house. There are many reasons including the obvious truth that letting the pros do it will free the client up to tend to the more significant details at such a stressful time.
Movers can also help the client meet the deadlines (as long as the movers themselves show up on time) . . . they've got the right equipment and can generally get most of the beloved belongings into the new house intact and unscathed.
There's another slightly less apparent reason to hire movers . . .
Your physical well-being!
I can honestly say that I believe more than HALF of the clients I have seen move themselves have injured themselves in some way during the move . . .
Broken ankle slipping off the truck ramp . . .
Broken wrist falling off the truck . . .
Hernia . . .
Damage to back from heavy lifting . . .
Sundry cuts and bruises . . .
Damaged egos, strained muscles, strained relationships, Fatigue, tension etc.
My scripts are pretty good when I'm advising Clients to hire the professionals.
In June of this year, I failed to counsel myself appropriately as Deb and I moved some furniture home to Tennessee from a family house in Virginia. We rented a truck and "Macho Me" was certain this would be a peice of cake. My miscalculation was that I had NO clue what we were moving . . . and for sure, we did not have enough man-power for the job.
The truly painful reality hit me as I was pulling @ a 300 pound clothes dresser up a flight of stairs with Uncle Wayne pushing from below . . . 1/2 way up the stairs, I pulled and he did NOT push . . . The dresser got away from me for a moment . . . I lunged forward with an heroic effort to save it from falling . . . I grabbed the handle of the 2 wheeler and yanked it back and sat down on the stairs and dug my heels in . . . As I was sitting down, I heard a tremendous POP and felt a sharp pain in my right shoulder . . . I had pulled my arm out of joint at the shoulder . . . OUCH!
Silly me . . .
Being the proud and stoic MAN that I am, I did not admit to the pain "I'm alright - I'm alright!"
I lived with the pain until this week when I finally decided to see a doctor. He believes I tore the cartilage in my shoulder and sent me for an MRI today. WOW! I do NOT recommend an MRI on a shoulder. This was NOT a fun procedure as they had to arthroscopic inject a dye into my shoulder first.
My point?
This shoulder injury has debilitated me now for 3 months . . . and looks like I'll need surgery and rehab to fully recover . . .
All because I was too stupid to listen to my own counsel :-)
So . . . Let your clients know that a good mover is worth every penny . . . NO amount of money is worth the risk of a long term injury . . . Unless, of course, your client happens to BE a professional mover.
Best,
