Ferris WheelWe are having an exciting weekend in Newnan Georgia. The county fair is in town, and coincidentally, Friday night was homecoming at Newnan High School.

Both are still pretty big events here. On Thursday evening, the square in downtown Newnan was closed and set aside for a huge pep rally, with music and cheerleaders and hundreds of Cougar loyalists.

The scene could just as easily have taken place in 1958 as 2008, with the beautiful backdrop of historic downtown Newnan and the agenda of rituals the same as they have been for decades.

Meanwhile, just south of town, the County Fair opened at our wonderful fairground complex. Since Coweta County still has plenty of farms, ranches and agricultural areas, the county fair is another event that is very reminiscent of the past. There are 4-H competitions, livestock shows, blue ribbon contests of every kind and a deluxe midway.

It is akin to living on a movie set, with slice of life episodes being depicted before your eyes. Yet it is truly part of the fabric of life here, deeply ingrained and not likely to change any time soon.

It nice to live in a community that still adheres to the old traditions; it's a wonderful connection with the past! And it's something special to pass on to our children. It is Americana at its finest!

Richard...I can almost smell the atmosphear.  The sounds of the kids laughing and the bells and whistle's.  Then the carnies goading you into trying their never miss game!

Mike...

It really "takes you back." That's why it's so great!

Jer...

I know that you are an Eagles fan, but where did you live in PA exactly?

Gail...

The aromas are certainly part of the county fair experience. And the fact that it's temporary adds to the excitement!

Bill...

I had a "wallet cleaning" experience with the carnies once, a lesson learned for the rest of my life! THX

WOW... This is happening in Newnan? I don't think that's too far from lil' ole Auburn... I seem to only work here, and only leave to drive to the ATL airport. I'll have to venture out. The fair looks really wonderful. thanks for the post.

Richard, I think the current atmosphere has caused people to re-think what a community is and how they are an integral part of it. We are after all in this together.

Thanks

Bo

I get motion sickness on rides but I do it any way.  You only live once and die once.

Richard:  How cool that you live in a place that still enjoys these events.  I can't imagine a pep rally being held in a downtown area here.  Sounds fun.

Richard,

Good post. I can almost hear the rides and the music and the chatter that comes from hundreds of people having a good time.

Richard- Your homecoming is early and your county fair is late....compared to my neck of the woods. I love festivities like these. Helps you feel connected to your neighbors. BTW the ferris wheel is my favorite carnival ride.....nice and tame.

Richard-I hope when you went back to this fair to get a chance to really enjoy it that you indeed did just that. I love the small town events like these. I actually prefer them to the huge events. More personal in the smaller events. I just returned from a local art festival. Lots of talent. enjoyed it a lot. Take care and keep blogging.

We always go to the fair and spend a day playing games and eating way too much crap. I can't wait for it to come again.
