As Public Servants do WE Have an Obligation to be Fair and Balanced?

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with HeatherO Inc.

I'm a little puzzled...I have always seen Activerain.com as a place to blog about real estate, and issues that affect us in our industry. I blog about my personal NON real estate related opinions, ideas, etc elsewhere. I came across a post yesterday that solely served to criticize Sarah Palin for the names of her children. Should this be the place for that?

I can watch/read the news for that kind of stuff all day long! (I choose not to most of the time because I believe that it is toxic!) I don't know about the rest of you, but I can use all of the positive energy I can get and every ounce of negativity I allow myself to be assaulted with only undermines that.

Clearly we all have our political opinions. Given. The question of whether ragging on kids for their names (especially one with a disability) is fair game, or even nice for that matter, is one thing...But is this the place for it?

We can certainly choose to blog about whatever we want, but as a professional serving the community (not to mention trying to earn business!), is this smart?  Do we have any duty to keep our personal feelings and attacks out of our business as public servants or no? Clearly active rain is read by both industry professionals and consumers.  Do we have any obligation to spare our counterparts from it? What about our Customers?

Everyone talks about the media being "fair and balanced". Do we have any obligation to do that? If we aren't obligated, is it prudent?

I see Activerain as a venue to learn about what's going on in our industry, learn new things, further my knowledge and effectiveness as a Broker and share what I can with others. Is that what others are here for, or is it just me?

I need all of the positive "energy" I can get these days, I don't particularly want to come here to hear  political name calling! (If it were relevant to how politics affects our business that would be different). In fact, I recently saw an email from Activerain that this was supposed to be place for "positive" information and not criticism. hmmm...does that apply to all things?

In any case, at a time when most of us need sales, and the consumer desperately needs us to reassure them, instill confidence, and help them save, sell or buy property, I would say that a true professional would consider this a frivolous waste of time if nothing else! Just curious to know what others think...

Heather, the political posts have gotten very ugly.   Along with the one you mentioned there have been posts critizing the clothing that the Obama girls have worn, attacks on the family members, etc.  Junior highish posts as far as I'm concerned.

Only bright side: It tells you alot about what the people who posts such things are about.  Makes narrowing the "refer to" list much shorter :-)

Being that AR is an open forum and format platform, I do not see any thing wrong with voicing political opinions to either political persuasion. Political debates and opinions are what has made this country strong. I for one like to read the comments of others to political posts as it give me more of a 'heartfelt' opinion that is missing in several of the left or right wing news casts...

Good Point! :)

Let me ask you this (out of curiosity...) would it matter to you in choosing "who to refer to" who the agent was criticizing? In other words, if they are junior high'ish, but they are on your "political side or team", would you refer to them? Does "who they are bashing matter"?

Politics very often generate a lot of strong emotions.  Many (including those that post to AR) just don't know when to leave their personal opinions behind.

Hi Heather, I am in agreement with you, the need for staying positive and professional is very high.  I ignore and skip over the negative posts about non real estate issues, as you said, we can get our fill of that anywhere else.  I know people have a right to their own opinions, but you are on target in my opinion.

HeatherO:  If you were asking me that question (it appears that you were) - No.  It does not make a difference, especially in light of the fact that I haven't made up my mind yet decisively whom to vote for.  I just cringe when I see the "picking on people" posts about candidates that have nothing whatsover to do with the issues facing our country.

Heather, I have no problem with folks voicing their political opinions on AR BUT I have a major problem with all the personal attacks against he candidates whether on AR or any where else. It has really gotten bad in this country. I guess folks trying to stand on their own merit is a thing of the past.

Personally I think you can blog about whatever you want.  However you need to realize that our blogs are read beyond the walls of AR and you may offend someone who was considering doing business with you now or in the future.  The personal political attacks have gotten out of hand and don't reflect well on us as a country, in my opinion.
