Carb loading at local Italian Restaurant... Highly recommended

As some of you know, my friend Adryon is running the Nike Women's Marathon to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  As some of you also know, I think that she is insane for doing this.  Great, doing it for a good cause, but insane.

One thing I can get behind, however, is the carb loading Friday nights before her run.  (She's currently running 20 miles in San Francisco as I type this).  She texted me this week & said, "I  need to carb load, want to go out & eat spaghetti?"  Um, Italian food, YES.

So we decided to go to Evana's Italian Kitchen.  It is in a strip mall with a Trader Joe's, a pet store, etc., but I've checked it out before and found the food to be delicious.  Inside, it's very cute, as you can see. Quite small with very good service.  Once I asked for just an eggplant appetizer (I have a lapband and can't eat a lot early in the day... I don't LOOK like I can't eat a lot, but I am aware of it).  Our server kept asking me, are you sure that is enough, like a good Italian mama would do.  Finally she said, "May I please put spaghetti with it?"  Basically, I felt I had to say yes to ease her worries about me not having enough to eat.  (I was not charged for the extra spaghetti).

Last night I had the Spinach Ravioli with Creamy Pesto Sauce and I am very afraid that this may become a craving that I will have to indulge more often.  The pasta was fresh, the sauce was perfect... Delicious.  Adryon had Chicken Putanesca and was also quite pleased.  Adryon had water, I had water too but also Pinot Noir (Hey, I'm not getting up at 4:30 to run 20 miles tomorrow!).  In fact, I'm already thinking about going back for dinner tonight.  My daughter loves Italian food... we could bring my grandma... sure, I can justify this!

Anyway, if you're in the East Bay Area of California, this is a restaurant worth trying. 785 Oak Grove Road in Concord, California.

20 miles?! Man, I think I'm doing good when I jog for two blocks! LOL ...but...I am very good at carb loading. The resturant looks adorable and the food sounds yummy. Thanks for the sensory stimulation. (time for a midnight snack)

Sharon - I wouldn't even run two blocks if I wasn't being chased by something scary.  I may be an expert at carb loading, however.  : )

Bonnie - That sounds great!  Send me some!

Chris-  JUSTIFY AWAY...LOL...you don't have to sell me on carbs, spaghetti, pesto, alfredo OR anything Italian, not to mention any variety of red wine that goes with the meal!  Italian is my #1 favorite food.  Alas, I live in an area that does NOT specialize in restaurants, Italian or otherwise.  Wish we lived closer ;-)  Geez, I might have to take up marathoning...nah...

p.s. What is a lapband...sorry, I just don't know???

Oh YUMMY! I'm starving right now, so I may need to go load up on some carbs. I think there might be some lasagne in the fridge. GBU, Chris!

Gail - I'm not a hard sell for Italian either.  I think my response when she asked, "Would you like to go out for Italian friday?" was DUH!  : )  A lapband is an alternative to the gastric bypass weight loss surgery.  Basically, I have a sort of a belt around my stomach so that I feel full much faster and stay full longer.

Elizabeth - Lasagne is good!  Can't go wrong with Italian, in my book.

Hi Chris- Thanks for the information on the Lapband.  I had never heard of it, but do know someone who did the gastric bypass - she has not been the same since.  She did lose a lot of weight but it also took a toll.  The website was very informative, I'm going to pass it along to a friend.

Gail - I too know a couple of people who had the bypass.  Once seems healthy though not skinny, the other I was very scared about for maybe a year... wasn't sure she was going to be okay.  When I studied it, the bypass scared me.  The lapband doesn't change how my body digests the food, it is basically just a belt.  I've kept off 126 lbs. and my knees no longer hurt all the time, so I'm pretty happy with it.  Except when I can't finish my pasta!  Which is the whole point of the lapband in the first place!

Chris ... I hope you don't mind my jusmping in here, but you lost 126 lbs?! WOW ... you go girl! I myself am a yo-yo and have been for all my adult life. I go from a size 4 as far up as a 16. Back and forth, up and down. The only thing that "saves" me is the fact that I love to lift weights and work out. So anyway...my point was, that I know the weight struggle. More power to you! ;-)

Thanks Sharon.  I'm still a "big girl" but not AS big a girl!  I'm happy where I am and staying there, so that's pretty amazing to me.  Lifting weights and working out is great.  I actually like Pilates, but I never do it!

This place sounds fabulous! And after dinner you can go shopping at Trader Joe's and not buy to much food because you will be stuffed from eating all that great fresh pasta. Oh and then you can walk off (not jog) some of the meal while shopping at the pet store for your new baby kitty!

Chris, someone said something like your comment above to me the other day.  He said the only way I would ever see him run would be if someone was chasing him.  That made me laugh.  This post made me hungry!  Gotta love those Italians!!  And you are a beautiful gorgeous woman.  Don't be knocking yourself in these posts girl.  Look at that smile!  Look at those pretty eyes.  Mangia.  It's good to eat.

Terrie - Good idea!  I always buy too much, but if I was full... maybe I'd just buy a lot of wine!  : )

Susan - Thank you but don't worry, I have good self-esteem.  I am just honest. I wouldn't run!  Even if someone was chasing me, I'd probably turn around & kick their butt rather than run!  lol  It is good to eat, especially Italian food!

Chris, you are just too cool to support your friend by eating Italian food with her.  The things we do for our friends.  :)  The spinach ravioli sounds yummy and I am not even a fan of spinach. Go figure.

That's a lot of weight you have kept off.  Good for you!
