I recently mentioned the third annual Balloonapalooza III in my blog on the Aliante Community in North Las Vegas. It's held at Craig Ranch Park by the city's parks and recreation department, and includes much more than the hot air balloons. It also has free concerts and entertainment, plus a carnival with rides, games and food.
We had hoped to catch the Balloon Glows on Friday and Saturday nights. Unfortunately the winds didn't cooperate. Having a pilot in the house, he had checked weather with North Las Vegas Airport's automated surface observation system, but it didn't look promising. Thursday it had been dead calm, but by Friday the winds had kicked up just enough to ground the delicate flyers, and did so again on Saturday. Hopefully they'll have their early morning weather that will allow them to fly.
There was still plenty of reason to stop by and enjoy the evening and the wonderful 'Second Spring' weather holding in the comfortable 80's. It was a perfect night to be in the park and listen to the concerts, with tonight's headliner the band Everclear from Portland. There was plenty of food on hand, and adults could enjoy a local microbrew from Big Dogs, to wash down a beer brat or a hot dog. For desert there were funnel cakes, ice cream, cotton candy, and everything else you'd expect to find at a fair.
The winds did die down to calm, a little too late for the glows, but allowed the fireworks to go off without a hitch. My pilot / photographer was at least able to get some great shots of something airborne, even if it wasn't the balloons. He also captured many scenes from the evening, including the glows of the burners without the envelopes attached.

Of course this is one of many neighborhood events found around Las Vegas. This weekend they were also holding the Greek Food Festival in Spring Valley on the southwest side. Coming up next week is something I've also blogged about before, the Super Run Car Show at Green Valley Ranch and downtown Henderson. This is in addition to all the other things to do here in the "Entertainment Capital of the World"... and what makes Las Vegas such a great place to live, work, and play.
