Friday night we spent some time with my wife's Grandmother.  She recently turned 92 years old and is undoubtedly one of the most cheerful people you'll ever meet.  When asked how she's doing, she'll smile from ear to ear and respond in one of two ways "Everything's wonderful.  No complaints." or "Not bad for an old lady."  As many people her age, she jokes about aging and takes it in stride.  Her trademark line is "Old age is no bargain, even with social security."

Me & Grandma

Grandma's always excited to hear about my success.  So on Friday when I told her that I had 3 closings this past week and had a contract accepted for just shy of $1 Million, she was overwhelmed with joy (I have to admit, so was I).

Then she asked "Brian, so where do you get your clients?"

The answer confused her.

"Well, Grandma, many of my clients come from the Internet"

Huh?

My wife chimed in "Gram... the computer.  The clients find Brian on the computer."

Huh?  How?

"I write articles about the local market, the homebuying and selling process and other things of local interest.  Clients find these articles and then contact me to help them with their real estate needs." (In other words, I blog.)

Finally, Grandma gave up with the questioning, but you could see her experienced brain trying to come to grips with the idea of clients finding me on a computer.  I'm certain that she's never used a computer.  She's amazed by cell phones as well.

This episode got me thinking.  Most REALTORS don't understand it either.

I've actually had a similar conversation with more than one agent from time to time.  While these agents see the computer as a tool for business, and have heard of blogging, they just don't think that it's a means for getting clients -- actual buyers and sellers.

While I'm happy to explain it to them, many of them still leave befuddled...

Just like Poor Grandma!

Good morning Brian,

I've tried to get some agents and brokers to start blogging.  They tell me they're too busy.  I think they're missing out on a great opportunity.

Brian,

As a consult to realtors, I'm somewhat surprised by the sheer number that don't get it - or don't want to even discuss it! Unfortunately, they also don't fully utilize old world tools like a Smartphone or email either ;)

Brian:  And the good news for thos of us who use the Internet to our advantage is that the competition is just not there to speak of.  If you master lead generation here, the other competitors in your area will have difficulty taking your market share from you.  It is truly a great competitive advantage as well as the future of real estate!

Hi Brian,

I think a lot of real estate agents are a little intimidated at the concept of blogging.  Many feel they either don't have anything to say or what they have to say is something nobody wants to hear.

I'm a new grandmother and enjoying every minute of it.

Take care.

Brian...how true it is! I'm still trying to get my business partner (Ray) to understand. Altho, he says I spend to much time posting on other blogs on AR and how is that going to get us any business? I also inform him it's very educational! I think I've learned more here that I did getting my GRI!

And your blog is certainly one that educates me! Thanks!

The internet is "magic" -- it is amazing to think that we can communicate with so many, so quickly, and so inexpensively.  With my adventure into blogging I found myself feeling a bit like a dinosaur -- and my career grew up in the computer industry.  I have a hint of how older folks feel when the pace of technology seems entirely too fast. ~ Evelyn

What fun to read your post - I was chuckling at the image of your grandma trying to figure it out.

I've been a member of AR for over a year and, until recently, felt that I didn'd have time either.  Now I consider blogging to be part of my job - like following up on clients, calling attorneys, you know what I mean.  It is now part of my daily schedule (in my date book!) and there is no negotiating.  If, for whatever reson, I miss a day - then it is made up on a day when it wasn't scheduled.

Congrats on your success and I am blogging so I can follow in your footsteps!  ;-)

Brian, I have no idea why so many agents refuse to grasp this powerful, FREE prospecting concept. I guess I'll continue working with the clients I get as a result of blogging and hopefully one day they will "get it". But I doubt Grandma ever will. :-)

Congrats on a great week!  I am just starting to get leads from the internet.  When agents in my office don't get it, or aren't interested in working the web or blogging for business, I just figure "more for me".  I know that is selfish, but...

My 80 year old mother in law doesn't get it either.  When I tell her I got a client from the web her repsonse is simply, "Oh, that's nice", and a smile.

My favorite "doesn't get it agent" was one who chided me for sending an offer via email because she only checked it once or twice a week.  Then in her most sarcastic voice asked how often I check my email.  "It comes to my phone, so pretty much as they come in," was my reply.

Who has time for all of this crap...  Like blogging... marketing... showing properties.  Heck, I probably show 10 or 15 properties for every one that I sell on a good week.

And I know exactly what you mean.  I have heard more than a few agents say "Is that what you get from that blogging?"

Grandma's adorable!  There are a lot of agents out there who don't know about SEO and Web 2.0, etc...they also don't know about Virtual Assistants :-)  When I am out and about around town and people ask what I do and how I do it...that most of my work is completed via the Internet...their eyes tend to glaze over.  Those people obviously aren't my ideal clients, but with a little education, they COULD be :-)

Brian, I remember when I started Real Estate, my Broker in Charge thought the only way to get clients was through cold calling! She didn't really know what the Internet or web sites could do for agents.  Believe it or not, this was in 2003!!!!   Some of the old companies and agents are still working that way!
