Charles I agree with your wife, the renovation looks great.  I am sure you will be spending a lot of time in that space.  Thanks for taking us through the process.

Charles, this project came out great. I love the view, here in St. Pete the best views are intercoastal water or gulf front, so it is refreshing to see some trees, - beautiful

Whens the party Charles?  How many Active Rain bloggers can that beautiful "room" hold?  It is really nice.  I hope you enjoy it for years to come.

Charles, I could not help but notice, and I did the other day too, but the top plate on the hand rail does not conform to acceptable trade standards. It is too wide to be grasped. Most contractors will install a smaller 'graspable' handrail on the inside. Any stairway more than 30" tall or over 3 treads has to have a 'graspable' handrail... Damn inspectors always catching something, right...

Bubba - is that all rails or handrails on stairs only? State or national code?

what a great "satellite" office , .... I had one of those, though, not nearly as nice, and I can tell you I got about as much work done there as you might expect :)

Charles, great series. The addition was done with great materials. Enjoy your new space.

Charles, I came back to check to see if you had posted anything on my response, and I did not see any so either it was deleted or the AR gods messed up. To answer your question, wide top plates as pictured are not acceptable as they are not 'graspable' by the average sized hand. This is in the National IRC codes. However, local governments have their interpretation of what they will accept and what they will not. In this area, the hand rail as shown is not accepted and needs to be corrected. I hope this helps. Give me a call if you need more information...

Bubba - Thanks, I will check with my builder but what you say makes sense.

Interesting that TREX a major manufacturer offers this as rail option.

Are you refering to all the rail or just on the stairs?

Charles every thing looks great. Good to know your wife is happy with the project:)

Charles, Just the stairs. FYI... I typically see a small hand rail run along side the bottom top plate made out of 2x2 material that is used for the handrail...
