Ann Arbor 5th Street Library to be torn downThe Ann Arbor District Library Board has voted to tear down the main library downtown and build a new one in its place.

Recently the Library posted a survey online with over 6,000 people responding. The survey asked how space at the library should be allocated, and about a proposed underground parking structure beneath the current surface lot next to the library.

More than half of those who responded to the survey, said Ann Arbor needed a renovated or new downtown library. Around 14 percent said they did not agree a new or renovated library is needed.

The 50-year-old building has been renovated twice already with the latest being in 1990.

I recently posted on all the new branch libraries in Ann Arbor have been built with sustainable design and materials.

The current building also does not comply with Americans with Disability Act (ADA) standards, although accomodations had been accomplished. This will be far better.

Ann Arbor is environmentally conscience, tearing down the older 343 S. 5th Street building is not surprising as the survey results indicated most Ann Arbor residents were in favor of doing so.  With the community speaking the library board voted to move forward with the project.

The current cost is projected at 71M, and will include a new auditorium to seat 400, which is desperately needed as I have attended, with standing room only several events there. It is projected the renovation will be paid for with bonds, fund raising and a tax increase.

The new building will increase the square footage by 47% to over 160,000 S.F. and is designed to be four stories.

Missy when I read " Ann Arbor library is to be torn down" I was happy to see that the next word was that it would be rebuilt.  A library is such an important place in a community.  I am sure it will be will worth the 71M, the tax payers now have to hope it stays within budget.

Missy- Take some photos of them tearing it down. You could use those for lots of posts:) How are they going to pay for it? Do they have the money?

160,000 square feet?  And I guess I read that right, because it checks out with what the library website states.  It would seem that it has taken on the cloke of cultural center beyond that which most libraries do.  Thank you for posting this--I will be with out of towners moving from Ann Arbor this weekend, and now I have a newly-enriched perspective on where they are coming from.

Missy,  I saw this on Ed's blog but I just don't understand how they can pay for it and tear it down before the vote for the bond.  Maybe the vote is in Nov and tear down starts afterwards.  It should be fabulous when built!  Thanks for covering it, but again I worry about paying for it.

Hope you are having a great fall.

Missy - We spend a lot of money on libraries in Brentwood and Franklin, but just to be honest, the public doesn't seem to care. We tend to be internet junkies now, and the books are just reference material sometimes. I wonder what a library should look like if you know that the books will rarely get used?

Hi Missy,

When you look at the downtown library compared to the new branches it isn't too surprising that the main library would be rebuilt.  Libraries have become so much more than a place to find books.  I love the new one in Chelsea, especially the area dedicated to middle and high school kids.  The last time I was in Chelsea there were a lot of kids there utilizing the area.  Hopefully, the new AA library will have something similar.

I love libraries, and would be excited to see an older one upgraded. Maybe more windows & light would be so nice & more space is wonderful!

Being from a small town, I about choked at 71 million.  That's more than our annual budget.  It sounds like it will be a wonderful addition to your community.
