If you want to feel really old, I think the best way is to hang out with young people. Truths just fall right out of their mouths, and they have no idea what the true impact is.
I was recently visiting with my daughter and her friends (a bunch of female 20-somethings), and my daughter asked If I'd been able to get her the information she'd requested earlier that week. I responded by telling her: "I texted that stuff to you yesterday".
Her friend, who is very cute, and I've known for years and years, turned to me, wide-eyed, and said:
"You know how to text, Mr. May?"...
and with that same smile & same treacly sweet voice that you reserve for your two-year old when they finally learn how to use the potty chair, she said to me...
"Good for You!"... (insert evil music, thunder clapping and maniacal laughter here).
I, of course, wanted to respond with:
"You know, I'm a professional Realtor® (note how I included the Registered Trademark symbol!!... huh? huh?) and I've been texting since long before you were born, little missy! Why, I INVENTED texting... yeah, that's the ticket... in fact, Shortly after I married my gorgeous wife, Morgan Fairchild, Al Gore and I invented the internet and have been texting each other back and forth since the election was stolen... er, I mean since he lost the election, you young whippersnapper."
I didn't, of course, say all those things... I know she didn't mean anything by it... in fact, I sensed she was kinda proud of me.... (grumble, grumble)... I managed to work a smile onto my face, and mutter under my breath "Thank you".

Hi Alan: You ought to feel lucky that she actually appreciates the fact that EVEN YOU know how to text. My 15 years old (who last year promised me that unlike his big brother, he will let me hug him in front of everybody all the time) has decided there is nothing this mom can really do that's even remotely close to presentable. So there.... Count your blessings. I guess I have to wait a few more years...
Thanks Sylvia... I guess the good news is that your 15 year old will eventually come around...
for me... I'll just appear, less and less technologically capable in the eyes of my children and their friends as I age ... - heavy sigh -
That is funny. I remember one time...I was giving a class at church and mentioned something about when I was their age. One of the girls in my youth group spoke up and said..."Hey, Mrs. Nieves...did they have paper when you were in school?" Okay...I may be over 35...but "did they have paper when you were in school?" WHAT THE HECK? She wasn't the brightest girl in the class. Good thing she was cute. LOL Just kidding. Well...not so much. GBU! = God Bless YOU!
yeah... i finally figured that out while reading through your archives... Gbu2
Don't worry Alan Elvis, It will come back to her in a blink of an eye. We age so quickly.
BTW, ooo did weally weally dood Mr. May. I'm vewwy pwoud of ooooo...waiter in de wain~deb
My nieces just freated out when they found out their 59 year old uncle was on Face Book. They thought that was way cool.
Deb - tank ooo vewwy, vewwey much...
Jerry - my girls have told me, in no uncertain terms, that I am NOT allowed to join facebook or myspace... they've said they will not "friend" me, nor allow me to post on their walls. And I believe them.
Alan...
This is so good and so funny that I want to feature it in Whacked, but I have to wait until tomorrow because there are too many good posts today! This is really good!
The phrase has become an in-joke around our office, now... (a little bit at my expense, but good naturedly so)... whenever someone accomplishes any "little" thing in the office... we say, in that "what a good baby" voice...
"Good for you (fill in the name), good for you!"
LOL great story. Wonder what the fad will be when these kids get to be our age...
First of all I wanted to comment on 'your comment' on Jeremy's anniversary blog - and to say - W
OW what wonderful creative ideas you came up with in your 'forthoughts'..........secondly loved the joke about he nozzle out of your forehead..........thirdly with respect to this post - you're right kids/teens are a riot...........when one of my daughters friends found out I had an account she said.........Wow what a Hip mom? Since then all her friends have added me! how funny is that? :-)
Mitzi - thanks... I'm sure that there will be something, when it comes time, that their children will be able to use to "bring them down to their size".
Liz - thanks for the kind words... interesting that you're the "hip" mom, and I'm the "banned" dad. I told them that lots of Realtors are now joining facebook and my space... the only response I got was "glaring". I'll back off.
btw... regarding the nozzle in my forehead... what makes you think I was joking?
O.K. I win, My older son actually accepted me as his friend on FaceBook and I am friends with his college roomate, my niece and nephew, and my son's high school frineds!
This made my day!
Sylvia... I would accept you on my facebook account, too. (If I were allowed to Be on facebook!)
Kids ! What would the world be like without their mischief, their shenanigans, their innocent laughter ? We we're once where they are now. I wish we could hold on to all of the great qualities they have. Hope you always keep the "kid inside of you" alive Alan. I'm sure your children love you very much.
I'm sure you're right, David.... er... wait... what have you heard?
:-)
