Lahaina Locomotive
A century ago, Maui's physical and economic landscape was dominated by lucrative sugar cane crops. Vast swathes of muted green stalks covered the island's rich red soil, awaiting harvesting by hard working sugar employees. With so much to harvest, an efficient method of transportation was needed to move the crops and their harvesters back to the old mills for processing. This necessity brought about the introduction of the locomotive to Maui. Miles of railroad quick sprung up, criss-crossing the Maui landscape, hauling it's cargo with immense speed for more than 50 years.
However, around 1950 the advent of large cane hauling trucks made the railroad obsolete, sending the "sugar cane trains" into retirement. Not much remains of the sugar cane train era, with one gleaming red and green exception: the Lahaina-Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad's West Maui Sugar Cane Train. Started in 1970, the LK&P Sugar Cane Train takes residents and visitors alike along a six mile stretch of West Maui, through current sugar cane fields and other points of interest from a bygone era . . .
