"Schwarzenegger is 'The Transit Terminator'"

The Sacramento Bee's Tony Bizjak continues discussion today on the Governor's plans to cut statewide public transit spending by $1.1 billion.

From the article: Mark Hill of the Department of Finance (speaking on behalf of the Guv) dismissed transit as "only 2 to 3 percent of all travel in this state," but neglected to point out the fact that 37% of commuters daily use transit within San Francisco and the East Bay, and 13% of commuters into Downtown Sacramento are using transit.

And all this just months after a November election in which the Governor was heavily promoting Proposit 1B, argued as a means to jump-start "traffic relief, mass transit, and safety improvements in every corner of the state without raising taxes."

The Governor talks about wanting California to go green, but he's now pushing to divert funds away from transit and toward massive road-building. That just doesn't add up. ♦

Our government in California, often does things that are just confusing.  Like trying to create more jobs, yet raising small business tax.

It's just especially contradictory given that the Governor has staked his reputation on California becoming "The Green State" and he has directly challenged the President on issues such as fuel economy requirements. We'll see how all this pans out. I know that Schwarzenegger is doing a bit of a balancing act and that the job growth that will come with a major public works project like highway improvements is important--but it shouldn't come at the expense of the environment or overall livability.

Should have known it when his campaign rolled into town in a Hummer!  I heard he took a ride on light rail recently.  I guess that is a start.  Maybe we can get him to think about street cars and local resource-based public transportation.
