Like much of the country, I've been consumed and fascinated by the financial bailout discussions over the last few weeks. It's pretty amazing how all roads are leading back to housing prices, something that I spend a lot of thinking about at Zillow.
Here are some good, academic resources in case you're interested.
- an interesting discussion of the current housing and financial crisis by Professor Stephen Malpezzi (University of Wisconsin). The speech is about an hour long and he explains the roles of various governmental agencies in the housing sector. It's worth listening to. Professor Malpezzi is on Zillow's Technical Advisory Board.
- Wharton has an interesting series of lectures on the current crisis. In particular, Joseph Gyourko's lecture (embedded here) was interesting.
- Here is a good research piece by Goldman Sachs which explains what's happening.
- Finally, and most interestingly, here's a great piece by Luci Ellis titled "The Housing Meltdown: Why did it happen in the United States?"
